ARK: Survival Ascended Server Requirements
ASA is built on Unreal Engine 5 and eats RAM like no other survival game. Here's the real RAM, CPU, and storage you need — per map and for clusters.
ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA) is the heaviest mainstream survival server you can run, full stop. Its Unreal Engine 5 backend uses far more memory than ARK: Survival Evolved did, and undersizing is the number-one reason ASA servers fail to launch. This guide gives you honest, defensible numbers.
The short answer
- RAM: 16 GB minimum for one map; 32 GB+ recommended for a busy server; 12–18 GB per additional map in a cluster.
- CPU: 4+ modern cores, prioritising single-thread performance.
- Storage: 60 GB+ on NVMe just for a single-map install.
Why ASA is so RAM-hungry
ASA moved to Unreal Engine 5, which brings dramatically better visuals — and a much bigger memory footprint on the server side. Even an empty ASA server idles high compared to other survival games, and memory climbs as players build, tame dinos, and explore. This is not a game where 8 GB is ever enough.
If you host ASE (the older Survival Evolved) as well, don't reuse those specs: ASA needs roughly double the RAM for the same map.

RAM by scenario
- RAM: 16 GB — a single map, small-to-medium population. This is the realistic floor.
- RAM: 24 GB — a single map with a healthy player count and lots of built structures.
- RAM: 32 GB+ — a busy 50+ player server, or comfortable headroom for a large tribe base.
- RAM: add 12–18 GB per extra map if you run a cluster (each map is a separate server process).
Always leave a few GB of OS headroom on top. A server that runs out of RAM on ASA doesn't limp — it crashes.
CPU and storage
- CPU: ASA's simulation is sensitive to single-thread speed. A high-clock CPU keeps things smooth when many dinos and structures are active. Four or more cores let the OS, saves, and the game share the box comfortably.
- Storage: NVMe is strongly recommended. ASA's install is large and it saves frequently; slow disk shows up as save-time hitches. Reserve 60 GB+ per map install.

Clusters: budget per map
A cluster links multiple maps so players transfer characters, dinos, and items between them. The catch is that each map is its own full server process with its own RAM appetite. A three-map cluster can easily want 48–64 GB total. Plan clusters on a large-memory plan or a dedicated box, not a modest VPS.
Recommended starting point
For a single-map community server, 32 GB / 6-core NVMe is the comfortable sweet spot; 16 GB is the bare minimum for a small group. For clusters, size by adding 12–18 GB per map. The full build, including the Proton step for Linux, is in how to set up an ARK: Survival Ascended server on a VPS.
Keeping ASA's memory in check
Even a well-sized ASA server benefits from a few habits that keep memory from creeping up:
- Restart on a schedule. A nightly restart clears accumulated memory before it becomes a crash. Set it up once with systemd restarts.
- Cap structures and tames sensibly. Massive tribe bases and dino armies are exactly what drives late-game RAM growth. Server settings that limit platform structures and decay abandoned bases help.
- Watch it with a tool. Keep an eye on usage so you can react before players do — monitoring server resources on Linux shows how to track RAM over time.
- Don't stack maps on a small box. If you want a cluster, budget the full 12–18 GB per map rather than hoping they'll share.
Undersizing ASA doesn't produce lag so much as outright failures to launch or mid-session crashes, so it pays to be generous with memory from the start.
FAQ
How much RAM does an ARK: Survival Ascended server need?
16 GB is the minimum for a single map, and 32 GB or more is recommended for a busy server. It's the most memory-hungry mainstream survival game because of its Unreal Engine 5 backend.
Why is ASA so much heavier than ASE?
The move to Unreal Engine 5 substantially increased the server's memory footprint. Expect roughly double the RAM of ARK: Survival Evolved for the same map.
How much RAM does an ASA cluster need?
Each additional map is a separate process needing 12–18 GB, on top of your first map's 16–32 GB. A multi-map cluster quickly reaches 48–64 GB.
Is 8 GB enough for an ASA server?
No. ASA idles high and climbs from there. 16 GB is the realistic minimum even for a small group.
