Bad Air

In Barotrauma, almost anything can kill you: crushing pressure, the abyss, or the creatures lurking within it. But the air you breathe has always just been... there. Bad Air changes everything. Now, air can be spoiled, lost, and fatally poison you. Ventilation is no longer a background mechanic—it’s a matter of life and death.

Key Features

  • Carbon Dioxide (CO2): Characters consume oxygen and exhale CO2. If ventilation is broken or off, CO2 accumulates. High levels cause hypercapnia, leading to asphyxiation, unconsciousness, and death.
  • Fire Smoke: Fires leave behind thick, toxic smoke. Inhaling it without a mask causes rapid poisoning and severe coughing. Smoke settles naturally or gets cleared by working vents.
  • How to treat poisoning? Any mask or suit with a Regular Oxygen Tank acts as a slow inhaler—breathing pure oxygen will gradually flush out toxins. For emergency treatment, use a Liquid Oxygenite injection or breathe from a Liquid Oxygenite Tank—they instantly burn the poison out of your bloodstream. Even standard CPR helps to revive a poisoned crewmate!
  • Dynamic Navigation HUD: The navigation terminal displays exact environmental data for every hull: O2, CO2, and Smoke density (only works if your sub has oxygen sensors).
  • Oxygen Filters: Oxygen generators now require replaceable carbon filters (crafted in the fabricator). Filters scrub CO2 and smoke from the air. If you run out of filters, the ship's air will become toxic.
  • Water Dynamics: Flooding no longer instantly destroys air. Instead, water displaces and compresses air into pockets, drastically increasing pressure and toxin concentration.

Compatibility

  • NeuroTrauma: Fully integrated. CO2 poisoning feeds into Acidosis. Smoke leads to Respiratory Arrest, and prolonged exposure to thick smoke causes Lung Damage up to 100%, leading to pneumothorax.
  • Enhanced Medical Operation (EMO): Fully integrated. Smoke causes Respiratory Arrest, CO2 deals standard asphyxiation damage.
  • Immersive Repairs: Fully compatible. The mod detects Immersive Repairs air filters and automatically yields the oxygen generator slot to them.
  • Safe to install mid-campaign — no need to start a new game.
  • Translated into 9 languages: English, Русский, 中文(简体), Deutsch, Français, Castellano, Português brasileiro, Polski, Türkçe.
