QoL - Medical Icons V2
Why
The game has more than 30 identical medical syringes. Absolutely f*cking brilliant decision. I always dreamed of scanning 30 identical icons with my eyes. Icon replacement is the most obvious mod imaginable, and I am honestly surprised nobody has done it properly yet.
About the Mod
In v1 this was a static icon replacement, but since I wanted configurability, it eventually turned into this:
Default preset - default: texturepack with status_icons from v1.
About the Mod: TECH
- The mod is fully CLIENT-SIDE.
- No compatibility problems have been found.
- The mod will override icons and sprites from all mods ABOVE it in the list. Mods BELOW it can override the icons if they do it through Lua/C#. XML icon overrides will be ignored.
Final icon atlases are compiled right in runtime and stored in your AppData folder. On Windows, that is:
C:\Users\<your user>\AppData\Local\Daedalic Entertainment GmbH\Barotrauma\ModConfigs\medical-icons\atlases

FAQ

Author, why the hell do you need C#? Are you trying to steal all my bitcoins?
No. The mod follows a Lua first concept, but some functions are either unavailable or just a pain in the a*s to use from Lua. In those cases, C# plugins are used. There are no compiled dll files in the mod - the source code is open to anyone who wants to look at it.
Is the mod fully finished?
For actually playing the game - yes. There are some non-critical bugs, for example holdangle is not currently set for items, and some rough UI edges: in a few places it is not very OK and some labels/translations are missing. But I have absolutely no energy left to fix that right now. If the mod gets enough reach and third-party texturepacks start appearing, I will fix all this sh*t and polish it to perfection.
Only Medical Icons? Can overlays and texturepacks be applied to other items?
Yes, technically this can be done. More than that, it would not require any extra work right now. For example, all items from QoL - More Distinguishable Textures could be added to the mod, and overlays could be custom-drawn on top of them as well. If the mod gets enough reach, I will think in that direction, improve the UI, and that will probably become v3 under the name QoL - Item Texture Customizer or something like that.
Can overlay settings be adjusted by dragging with the mouse instead of using sliders?
Technically, I think yes. If there is clear demand and enough reach, I will do it.
How It Was Made
Something like this:

The mod went through every stage of madness: XML v0 -> Lua v1 -> Lua && C# v2.
During development, the thing that f*cked me up the most was the UI. In the end, I wrote a small library that renders the whole menu in runtime from a .json UI layout description. That was easier than trying to build it by hand. Words cannot describe how much this sh*t exhausted me.
Sources with all scripts are available on GitHub:

The mod contains a lot of reusable libraries, both in Lua and C#. Most of them are already in pretty good shape, and you can reuse them in your own mods. I will gradually update the GitHub repo and clean everything up for my future projects.
By the end, I simply did not have enough strength left to polish everything, so there are still a couple of places with hardcode, and not everything has been brought up to the new standard yet. It will be fixed gradually.
