Float My Boat - Enhanced

Sailing boats and rafts for the Exiled Lands.

Build a boat, put it in the water and sail it - across the sea, the rivers and the highland lakes, with friends, your follower, a captive and a crate of cargo aboard.

Features

  • A Boat at the Carpenter's bench, and a Raft you can build by hand anywhere
  • Physics sailing - it rocks, bobs and rides the water, and won't capsize
  • Wind matters - faster with it behind you, slower into it, never stuck
  • Square or fore-and-aft sail, swappable while the boat is stopped, with cloth that billows and swings to meet the wind
  • A hand on the tiller - your character steers with it and leans into the turns
  • Passenger seats, and your follower climbs in when you take the helm
  • Carry a knocked-out captive safely across water
  • Fit a cargo chest and a lantern from the Boat Options radial menu (the lantern is also placeable as a normal decoration)
  • Speed gauge with wind direction and strength (toggle on/off from the radial menu)
  • Spray, a wake, and sounds for the sail, the water, the creaking hull and the odd sandbar
  • Each boat has its own map marker that follows it
  • Parked boats save where you leave them, and give back their fittings when picked up

How to Sail

  • Learn the recipes in the Knowledge menu under Survival. The Raft and its sails are made by hand, the Boat and its fittings at the Carpenter's Workbench.
  • Place it from the shallows, side-on to the shore.
  • Hold Interact (Radial Menu on the Boat) > Boat Options to fit a sail, crate or lantern from your inventory. A sail is required to operate the boat.
  • Interact to take the helm. Other players Interact to take a passenger seat, or just stand on the deck.
  • W / S (left stick) - tap to step the sail: stowed, half, full. S from stowed backs up.
  • A / D (left stick) - steer.
  • C (controller B) - get up and leave the helm. Space (controller A) - jump straight out. The boat coasts to a stop and parks.
  • D-pad up / down - camera zoom on a controller.
  • Aground? Back off with S, or use Boat Options > Push into water.
  • Captives: Interact with the boat while dragging one to load them. Unload from the Hold Interact menu.
  • Unload the captive and empty the crate before picking the boat up.

Multiplayer and Compatibility

  • Tested in single player, co-op and on a dedicated server. Servers need the mod installed too.
  • Co-op guests may see "Unknown Item" on a parked boat. Should still work properly.
  • Adds new items only and overrides no base-game assets, so load order doesn't matter. IDs are in the 79991000 range.
  • Uninstalling removes placed boats and their contents.

From the Field Notes of Dr. Saretha

[i]Saretha woke in a ditch. That was the first problem. The second was that someone was pulling her out of it by the arm.

'Up,' said the someone. A woman, lean and sunburnt, with the look of a person who had already made several bad decisions that day and was not finished. 'They're coming.'

'Who is coming?'

'Everyone.'

'That is not an answer.'

'It will be in a minute.'

Saretha looked down at herself. Rags. Mud. A great deal more leg than she remembered owning.

'Where are my trousers?'

The woman was already hauling her down the slope. At the bottom, by the mouth of a cave, a small boat sat with its nose in the river mud. It was grey with age and patched in more places than it was boat.

'Get in.'

'Absolutely not. I am a natural philosopher. I have been published. I am not setting foot in that rickety piece of--'

The woman put a hand between her shoulder blades and pushed. Saretha went into the boat with a noise she would later describe as dignified.

The trees behind them burst open. Men with spears, men with clubs, and at the front a vast shirtless man, roaring.

'MY BOAT!'

The woman shoved them off the mud, swung aboard, and said nothing at all. A spear went into the water beside them. Then the current took them, and the shouting fell away behind.

Saretha sat up, picked a leaf out of her hair, and decided that someone had better establish some order.

'I want it understood,' she said, 'that I am a scientist. Not a savage.'

The woman looked at her for a long moment - at the rags, the mud, the leaves, the legs - and then down at her own perfectly good trousers.

'Good to know,' she said. 'I'd never have guessed.'

Her name was Nadia. She did not know what a scientist was. Saretha explained. It took some time.

'We had one of those in my village,' Nadia said. 'He ate a mushroom to see what it would do.'

'And what did it do?'

'We buried him on a Tuesday.'

'A martyr to science.'

'A martyr to mushrooms.'

The boat creaked. It leaked a little. It did not sink, which Saretha, who had been waiting for it to sink, found faintly disappointing as a result.

'That man,' she said eventually. 'It's his boat, isn't it.'

'Borrowed.'

'And why, exactly, did you borrow a stranger along with it?'

'You were the distraction.'

'From what?'

'From me taking the boat.'

'And what was I doing that was so very distracting?'

Nadia told her. At dawn, it seemed, Saretha had walked into the camp with a notebook and asked the chief whether she might measure his head. He had said no. She had measured it anyway. Then his brother's. Then a goat's.

Saretha was quiet for a while.

'I don't remember any of that,' she said at last. 'It does sound like me. And my trousers?'

'The goat.'

Nadia reached into her shirt and handed over a small, battered notebook, singed at one corner. 'Picked it up in the camp. Looked good for starting fires.'
