What is Lament?
Lament provides alternatives for dealing with character death and respawn. It allows server owners and administrators to customize the gameplay on their server by giving them the tools to create areas of greater or lesser risk, and better curate what happens when player characters die.
Death Effects such as equipment durability loss and corruption gain let you scale how punishing death is for players.
Reanimation lets you replace the bed/bedroll system with one tailored to your world & players.
Dread Zones and Benediction Auras let you implement Death Effects & Reanimation differently in different regions of your map, or create sanctuary areas.
Covenants let you organize players and clans into factions, and give those factions exclusive access to Reanimation Sites.
Lament’s toolkit is highly customizable and can be configured to work in an almost infinite number of different ways.
Getting Started
WORLD SETTINGS
- Under the World heading on left, you’ll see 4 tabs:
-

Death: lets you enable and customize effects that apply to player characters when they die, such as item durability loss and corruption
- Reanimation: Lament’s dynamic respawn system utilizing Lamenting Stone placeables
- Covenants: Factions of players and/or clans called Covenants can be managed here. These are utilized by the Reanimation system to customize who respawns where (i.e. to make a Reanimation location exclusive to one clan, or a group of clans)
- Tracker: Shows you a list of all the Lamenting Stones you’ve placed in the world. Clicking on any of these will open the options menu for that stone (more on that next)

- LAMENTING STONES
- Search in the admin item spawn panel again, this time in the Building category for an item named Lamenting Stone
- Place the stone the same way you would any decoration item, then long press the interaction key while facing it to open the radial menu. Select the Lament icon button (“Configure Lament”)
- This will show you the same settings view as before, but with two buttons under the Lamenting Stone heading enabled:
-

Options: Lets you configure this Lamenting Stone individually, creating localized affects
- Actions: A small list of actions related to this stone, i.e. Teleport to Location
-
Death Effects
- You can impose any or all (!?!?!) of the following death effects on player characters when they die:
-

Item Durability Loss
- Corruption Gain
- Drop Inventory Items (any combination of Backpack, Shortcut Bar & Equipment)
- All of these effects are configurable with a minimum player level and values like corruption value, durability loss amount, item categories, drop specific items, etc.
-
Reanimation
- Reanimation is Lament’s dynamic respawn system. It lets you completely rewrite the rules for where and how players respawn after they die. The options the player has for selecting a respawn point, and where that selection takes them, is completely up to you, based on the way you configure Reanimation.
- Here are some examples of how you can use this feature on your server:
- Forgiving World, Dangerous Regions:
- You don’t enable Death Effects or Reanimation in your world settings. Near dungeons and your homebrew adventure areas, however, you’ve set up Dread Zones (more on this later) that cause damage to players’ gear when they die, and forces them to Reanimate in the thrall pits and prisons of whatever enemy faction they face in that region.
- Bastions of Safety in a Wicked Land:
- Your World Settings for both Death Effects and Reanimation are brutal, making every adventure high-stakes and every mistake costly. However, in your roleplaying hubs and specific sanctuary areas such as hot springs and oases, Death Effects are disabled and players will always Reanimate in safety.
- MMORPG Graveyards
- Your world is based on high fantasy settings like Warcraft and Elder Scrolls. Players only have two options when they die: Reanimate back at their clan stronghold, or at a nearby Spirit Stone. The mystery of the magic that powers the Spirit Stones is built into your world’s lore and storylines, and you’ve peppered the map with them in a strategic way, making the journey back to where you died more time-consuming in some areas than others.
-
Lamenting Stones
- Lamenting Stones are the backbone of Lament. They are placeables, and serve as a way to localize certain specific Death Effects, Reanimation rules, etc.
- They can be used to create Dread Zones, giving specific areas of your map special risks, or use the Benediction Aura to create sanctuaries. Lamenting Stones:
-

…can only be placed by admins, and can only be interacted with by admins once placed. Any admin can interact with them, regardless of clan affiliation
- …can be placed anywhere
- …do not generate land claim and are not affected by the land claim of other structures
- ...cannot be damaged by any means, and can only be destroyed by an admin
- ...do not decay over time
- …cannot be destroyed by loss of stability
- …can look like any other decoration from the base game or a mod by giving it a Glamor Decoration
