They say alebrijes are born in dreams, when a fevered imagination weaves a creature out of everything a person loves. This one has the face of a dog and the bearing of a great cat, and its fur long ago turned into feathers and leaves.
It steps out of the dark along the slide: a profile, a dark nose, an amber eye. Behind it streams a wake of pink, turquoise, orange and yellow leaves. They pour down the grip and bloom into a marigold, the flower lit in Mexico on feast days. Black steel shows between the leaves, and the pattern glows against it like night lights.
It is neither cruel nor kind. It has simply come along with you. One beast, one flower, the night around.
