They say this rifle was born in a jeweler's workshop, not a gunsmith's. The old jeweler had spent his life laying gold into crowns and sword hilts; his final commission came from a sniper who never gave a name: "Let it catch the light, but never give me away."

The master plated the rifle in 24-karat gold from end to end. Then, one night, he poured over it a black varnish mixed from lamp soot and the ash of spent gunpowder. The varnish flowed across the cooling metal like smoke, drew its own path, and decided for itself where to stop. The jeweler never touched it. "The shadow knows where the gold cannot go," he said.

The next morning the sniper took the rifle, left the payment, and was never seen again. All that remained was a single line in the master's ledger:

"Gold draws the eye. Shadow hides the bullet."
