As early as more than 1,500 years ago, stories began circulating about a giant monster in Loch Ness that frequently emerged to devour people and livestock. In ancient times, those who claimed to have witnessed this monster described it in a variety of ways: some said it had a long trunk like an elephant and a soft, smooth body; others described it as having a long neck and a round head; some said that when it appeared, layers of foam would form and splash in all directions; and still others claimed it exhaled mist, causing the lake’s surface to be shrouded in fog at times... These various legends are quite inconsistent, yet they are both magical and terrifying. The Making of the Loch Ness Hoax: A Summary 1. Motive: A Humiliated Hunter’s Revenge

In late 1933, big-game hunter Marmaduke Wetherell was hired by the Daily Mail to track the Loch Ness Monster. After his discovery of "fresh tracks" was debunked by museum paleontologists as prints made from a taxidermied hippo-foot umbrella stand, Wetherell became a national laughingstock. Determined to avenge his bruised ego, he plotted to fabricate the sensational monster photograph the newspaper desperately craved.

2. The Prop: A Clockwork Submarine and Sculpted Neck

Wetherell enlisted his son Ian and his stepson Christian Spurling, a skilled model maker. Spurling modified a 14-inch (35 cm) Woolworths clockwork toy submarine, mounting onto it a plesiosaur-like head and neck sculpted from plastic wood. Ballasted with lead weights, the hull submerged just beneath the surface, exposing only the 12-inch (30 cm) faux neck above water.

3. Execution: Cropped Scale and Destroyed Evidence

In a secluded bay, the crew wound up the submarine and photographed it slicing through the ripples. Immediately after the shoot, Wetherell smashed the toy and sank it to eliminate all physical evidence. The developed photos were then tightly cropped—deliberately cutting out the distant shoreline and small ripples to warp the sense of scale, transforming a foot-long toy into what looked like a colossal prehistoric leviathan.
