Kuchisake-onna (the Slit-Mouthed Woman)—a renowned Japanese urban legend that spread widely during the Showa era in 1979—is described as a tall young woman with long black hair, dressed in an overcoat, with the lower half of her face concealed behind a white mask or scarf. At night, she emerges in narrow alleyways to confront passersby with the question: "Am I pretty?"
Regardless of which conventional answer the victim chooses, it leads to doom:
Answering "No": This instantly enrages her, prompting her to slash your throat or fatally stab you on the spot with a pair of giant tailoring shears or a kitchen knife.
Answering "Yes": She pulls down her mask to reveal a gruesome mouth slit from ear to ear, countering with: "Even like this?"
If you change your answer to "No" → She will strike you down and kill you on the spot.
If you brace yourself and insist on "Yes" → She will stalk you all the way to your doorstep to murder you, or slit your lips into the same grotesque shape to match hers (making you "pretty" too).
