Caps can grow on their own at night. They need 100% darkness. You can change other conditions in options. Anyway, they won't take root, if you are looking at them.
Animals (rabbits) can eat caps on the ground if you select "Animals" option to "Only animals". Be careful to drop more caps or it will be eaten partly and won't take root. Also value "Birds&Animals" will give ability to eat cap to the birds. Now planting is not so easy? :) You can set this option to "No for all", and it will forbid to eat caps for animals.
By default, stack of 2 caps is needed to take root. You can select in options, how many caps is needed to take root.
Mushrooms grow in the rain as usual. The mod don't touches mushrooms mechanics.
