About MoreTooltips

From Factorio Mod Portal

Extends tooltips with additional information: building dimensions, fluid filters, module limits, heat parameters, radar scan time, and more.

MoreTooltips extends Factorio's tooltips with technical information not visible in the base game: building dimensions, fluid parameters, module limits, heat characteristics, radar scan time, and much more.

Settings Overview

| Setting | Description | |:--------|:------------| | Colored fluid markers | Adds colored markers (●, ■, █, ◆, ▲, ⬤, ✸, ★) to fluid names based on their base color | | Building size information | Shows building dimensions (width × height) in tiles; can hide size for 1×1 buildings | | Heat information | Shows temperature info for reactors, heat pipes, and boilers (max temp, working temp, specific heat, transfer rate) | | Heating energy information | Shows if a building can freeze on cryogenic planets and how much heating power (kW/MW) it requires | | Radar information | Adds sector scan time to radar description (calculated from energy per sector and energy usage) | | Drill full stack output | Shows whether mining drills can output full stacks directly onto transport belts | | Allowed science pack information | Displays icons of all science packs the lab can use | | Fluid information | Shows fluid box details: flow-through type, min/max temperature, pipeline length, input/output volume | | Recipe effect information | Shows if productivity is allowed for a recipe, which effects are forbidden, and max productivity bonus | | Possible machine effect information | Shows which module effects (speed, productivity, efficiency, pollution, quality) can affect the machine | | Effect source information | Shows where the machine can receive effects from: modules, beacons, or only global surface/planet effects. | | Allowed machine modules information | Shows which module categories (icons) can be installed in the machine | | Beacon supply area information | Shows beacon range; indicates if quality increases the range (with Quality mod) | | Resistance information | Displays resistances on military entities: turrets, walls, gates, vehicles, artillery, spawners (format: "Reduction/Percent") | | Ammunition property information | Shows attack type (standard / position shot / cone or line), target filters, and energy cost per shot | | Suitable ammunition information | Adds icons of all ammunition types the weapon can use to its description | | Landmine activation time information | Shows the time (in seconds) after which a landmine activates when placed | | Voiding information | Shows which machines can void items/fluids (incinerators, flare stacks, clarifiers, etc.) and the voiding rate per second |

Comparison with the Original Extended Descriptions

The original Extended Descriptions was a great mod for Factorio 1.1, but it hasn't been updated and doesn't work properly with Factorio 2.0. MoreTooltips is a complete rewrite from scratch, not just a port.

What's new and better

More features. The original had 10 informational modules. MoreTooltips adds more.

Individual toggles. MoreTooltips lets you enable or disable each feature individually in the startup settings.

Performance. The original scanned data.raw multiple times with deep nested loops, noticeably slowing game startup on big modpacks. MoreTooltips iterates only relevant prototype categories once, with minimal overhead.

Modern API. The original injected tooltips by recursively merging localised_description tables using a complex '?' fallback system. MoreTooltips uses Factorio's native custom_tooltip_fields array — cleaner, faster, and conflict-free.

Localization. MoreTooltips includes 12 languages.

Fluid markers. The original added a simple colored square. MoreTooltips lets you choose the symbol: ●, ■, █, ◆, ▲, ⬤, ✸, or ★.

What was left out

Not every feature from the original was ported. Three features were removed because they added complexity without real value:

  • Inserter throughput stats — Required heavy calculations and does not support curved inserters. Use the mod "Inserter Throughput" if needed.
  • Solar/accumulator ratios — Used a complex algorithm. Has little meaning on other planets with different day/night cycles.
  • Tank size/pressure — Tank volume is already displayed, and pressure is no longer used in the Factorio 2.0 fluid system.

Credits

This mod is a continuation of the work by notnotmelon and their mod Extended Descriptions, which laid an excellent foundation for expanding game tooltips.

Thanks for the idea and inspiration!
