Tree Collision (ZarSasha's Fork)

by ZarSasha · for Factorio

The collision box size can be reduced for all non-special trees, as well as the planted Nauvis tree variant, making it much easier to traverse dense forests. Notably, this is accomplished without affecting map generation, so distances between trees remain the same. Updated fork of the mod "Tree Collision" by skomick.

Tree Collision (ZarSasha's Fork)

This is an updated fork of the mod [Tree Collision] by skomick. It has the same purpose of reducing the collision box sizes of trees so that forests can be traversed much more easily, but it has been improved in a few ways:

  • Slightly broader application: Collision boxes can not only be reduced for all the normal, naturally generated trees, but also for the plantable Nauvis tree variant from Space Age, if desired.
  • Values are configurable: Collision box sizes for normal and planted trees can be configured separately in startup settings. They are all changed according to a factor, rather than being reduced to the same exact size.
  • Preserves forest density: Prober distance between trees is maintained in naturally generated forests, which prevents the formation of any tight clusters and preserves the intended overall density of the forests. This also applies to dead/dry trees and trunks, as well as the exotic species from the Space Age DLC.
  • Quiet planted forests: A particularly annoying, ambient critter sound effect has been removed from the planted trees (the sound was far too frequent, and artificial mono-culture forests should have less noises, not more!).

There are a few downsides to keep in mind:

  • The player can traverse forests more easily, but so can enemy creatures.
  • With smaller hit-boxes, the shotgun won't work as well for clearing forests.
  • If planted trees have their collision box size lowered, they can also be manually planted at higher density.

Notes:

  • If you use [Squeak Through 2], be sure to disable modification of trees in the startup settings, so that values won't be changed twice.

FAQ

Q: Will any changes to settings work for an existing save? A: Forests correctly spawn according to settings on a new save as well as on any newly generated chunk. Overlapping collision boxes due to updated values won't cause any crashes. As of v1.3.0, forests generate as intended no matter the settings, meaning that proper distance and density are preserved no matter the size of the collision box.

Q: Are you going to make any changes to the mod? A: I were able to improve the mod in v1.3.0, but there might still be a few things I want to tweak. In particular, it would be great if I could somehow modify the collision box size of planted trees without changing the density at which they can be planted. Currently however, it seems to be an unsolvable problem.
