About Water Processing - Fork

From Factorio Mod Portal

Clean water is not free. Adds raw-water treatment, groundwater conditioning and deep wells to Factorio 2.1, Space Age, Krastorio 2 and Space Exploration. Custom building artwork is currently provisional.

Water Processing Fork

Clean water is not free.

Water Processing Fork continues the original K2 Water Processing concept by ayashiemon, brings it to Factorio 2.1, and expands it into a water-infrastructure mod that can also be played without Krastorio 2.

Natural surface water is no longer immediately usable as clean process water: offshore pumps provide raw water, which must be treated. Factories can also extract and condition groundwater using energy-intensive deep wells, subject to the rules of the planet or surface.

The aim is a water-supply chain that feels industrial and meaningful without turning water production into unnecessary micromanagement.

> Important for existing saves: Installing this mod changes the fluid obtained from natural water sources to raw water. Existing offshore-pump networks and machines expecting clean water may stop working. Review your power generation, steam systems, chemical plants and all other water consumers before enabling the mod in an established factory.

Features

Surface-water treatment

  • Natural water sources supply raw water instead of ready-to-use clean water.
  • Multiple treatment stages turn raw water into usable water.
  • Reusable filters and treatment media support regeneration and more involved processing routes.
  • A dedicated 3×3 precipitation tank provides industrial-style treatment infrastructure.
  • When Krastorio 2 is installed, additional recipes and advanced processing routes integrate K2 materials and technologies.

Groundwater and deep wells

Deep wells offer an alternative to lakes and oceans, but are deliberately expensive to build and operate.

  • 5×5 building footprint
  • 250 groundwater per second
  • 5 MW operating power and 100 kW idle drain
  • Four centred fluid outputs (north, east, south and west)
  • No modules or beacon effects
  • Separate Deep Groundwater Extraction research
  • Groundwater requires conditioning before becoming normal usable water, but its treatment is less involved than that of surface water.
  • Groundwater processing does not create usable mineral by-products.

Planet and surface restrictions

Space Age: Deep wells are allowed on Nauvis and Gleba. They are blocked on Vulcanus, Fulgora, Aquilo and space platforms. Unknown modded planets are blocked by default until explicitly supported.

Space Exploration: Deep wells can be built only on planets or moons with water availability. They are unavailable on waterless worlds, orbital surfaces, asteroid belts and spaceships. SE water availability controls where extraction is possible, not the well's fixed production rate.

Mod compatibility and progression

The progression and available treatment recipes adapt to the installed mod stack:

  • Factorio 2.1 (base game): independent core technologies and raw-water treatment; Krastorio 2 is not required.
  • Space Age: core processing with planet-specific groundwater restrictions.
  • Krastorio 2: K2 materials, research progression and advanced filtration, including an imersite-based treatment route.
  • Space Exploration: water-aware planet and surface restrictions, including SE-only setups.
  • Krastorio 2 + Space Exploration: combined research progression and science requirements.

Graphics – provisional artwork and contributions welcome

The current custom machine sprites, including the deep well and precipitation tank, are provisional placeholder graphics.

I am developing this mod primarily from the engineering and gameplay-design side, not as a professional Factorio sprite artist. These graphics do not yet meet the visual polish and consistency of Wube Software's official Factorio artwork. They are a practical interim solution, not a claim to Wube-level quality.

Contributions from experienced artists are very welcome. If you would like to improve or replace the building sprites, animations, shadows, or destroyed variants, please reach out through the mod's Discussion section. Contributors will be credited for their work.

Savegame warning and wastewater compatibility

Adding this mod to an existing factory can disrupt water supply. Newly extracted water is raw water; older pipes may still contain clean water until networks are modified. Check offshore pumps, boilers, steam and power generation, chemical production, cooling, and K2/SE water consumers. Add the required treatment capacity before reconnecting production lines.

Industrial dirty-water / wastewater processing (including K2 resource recovery) remains separate from the natural-water supply chain; this mod does not automatically force recovered process water back through surface-water treatment.
