Borderblock
A slow, strategic territory game for Garry's Mod, inspired by OpenFront.
⚠ Very early version
This is a very early build. Expect bugs, missing features, rough edges and balance that changes a lot between updates. Things may break, and saves and settings may not carry over. If something goes wrong, please leave a comment with what happened (and the console error, if there is one). It really helps!
What is it?
The world is a pixel map cut into regions. Pick a capital, train soldiers, and send armies to take over your neighbours, one region at a time. Where you mass your troops, what you defend and which way you push is the whole game. The last nation standing wins. So does whoever holds 80% of the land, or the biggest nation when time runs out.
Features
- Region-based conquest: armies march across the map and fight the garrison of every region they reach
- Terrain matters: forests, hills and mountains slow your soldiers down and give defenders a big advantage
- Boats: build a boat dock to send soldiers across shallow sea
- Buildings: boat docks, shipyards, cities (train faster, earn gold) and forts (stronger defence)
- Ships: warships that sink enemy fleets, and trade ships that sail to other ports for gold
- Bots: AI nations that expand, build and attack, so you can play alone or fill up a server
- Worlds: generated Continents, Pangea and Archipelago maps, plus the Real Earth and Los Santos (GTA V)
- Custom maps: admins can upload their own heightmap images (PNG/JPG) right from the game
- Admin settings: change game speed, training, costs, bots and much more live, with no restart
- Server list: servers show up automatically on borderblock.x3n.dk with a join button
How to play
- Click an empty region in the first 30 seconds to make it your capital
- Click one of your regions to select it, then click another region to send soldiers there
- [ and ] or the SEND bar: how many soldiers to send
- 1-6: build (with a region selected)
- Click a warship or press Q for all of them, then click the sea to move them
- Right-drag / WASD to move the map, mouse wheel to zoom, Space to jump to your capital
Hosting
Start a game with the Borderblock gamemode on any map. The 3D map isn't used. Superadmins get a SETTINGS button in the top bar. Everything can also be set with borderblock_* console variables in server.cfg.
Planned
- Bridges, canals and tunnels, with an underground layer
- Alliances and diplomacy
- Globe view when zoomed all the way out
- Saving and continuing worlds
- Lots of balancing and polish
Feedback and ideas are very welcome in the comments!
