About this mod

This is the Half-Life: Alyx version of Slightly Better Half-Life 2 Ambient Sounds.

The idea behind this version is pretty simple: bring some of the atmosphere and sound variety from Half-Life: Alyx into Half-Life 2, while still making sure everything fits the original game.

I didn't want to completely replace Half-Life 2's sound design or make it sound like a different game. Instead, this version adds small details throughout the maps, such as distant vehicles, wildlife, machinery, combat, sirens, and other environmental sounds that help make each area feel less empty.

Most of the new sounds are kept fairly subtle. They're not supposed to constantly grab your attention or make the game feel noisy. They're mainly there to blend into the background and give the environments a little more character.

This version is also being made from scratch. The sounds are adjusted and placed specifically for Half-Life 2, rather than simply adding Half-Life: Alyx sounds everywhere and calling it a day.

What's Changed?

More Ambient Sounds – Adds extra background sounds throughout the game to make different areas feel less empty.

Half-Life: Alyx Inspired Sounds – Adds selected sounds from Half-Life: Alyx that fit naturally into Half-Life 2.

High-Quality Sounds – Improves various ambient sounds, including birds, sirens, machinery, and other environmental effects.

City 17 / Trainstation – Adds more distant city sounds, the strange warbling ambience, truck sounds, and other small background details.

Canals – Adds distant Metrocops running, APC arrests, and other sounds while traveling through the canals. Before reaching the shanty area, you'll also hear "shanty_battle," with distant gunfire and Headcrab shell impacts.

Eli's Lab – Adds "eli_battle," giving you distant sounds of the Combine attack happening around Black Mesa East.

Ravenholm – Adds more crow sounds, distant town noises, screams, and creepy background ambience. There's also a small bonus: some wooden rooms can play "tone_warehouse," an unused ambience from the game's beta.

Coast – Adds distant Ichthyosaur sounds around the water to give the coastline a little more life.

Nova Prospekt – Adds distant turret sounds, prisoner screams, and other background sounds around the prison.

Streetwar – Adds more distant Dropship, Gunship, APC, and combat sounds to make the fighting around City 17 feel more intense.

Citadel – Adds a few subtle ambient sounds to freshen up the Citadel without changing its overall atmosphere too much.

The Goal

The goal isn't to turn Half-Life 2 into Half-Life: Alyx.

I just wanted to add some extra atmosphere to areas that could use a little more background detail, while keeping the original Half-Life 2 feeling intact.

Some changes are things you'll probably notice right away, while others are the kind of sounds you might only notice when you stop moving for a moment and listen to what's happening around you.

Best experienced with headphones.
