The crash fix

I modified one boolean in particle that's originally inside "weapon_fx.pcf".

weapon_fx.pcf  weapon_tracers_incendiary   initializers    Velocity Noise     Apply Velocity in Local Space (0/1) | bool | 1 -> 0

What does switching it to 0 do? I don't know. I haven't noticed any visual changes.

The particle manifest

Then I copied that particle (and its 2 relatives) to a separate particle system - "linux_fix.pcf". Patching "weapon_fx.pcf" directly would make other mods modifying that file incompatible. Using any existing manifest would mean rendering mods using other manifests incompatible. So I decided to merge 3 most popular manifests into 1 and added a line containing "linux_fix.pcf" at the end, so the fixed particle always takes precedence.

Console errors

Those are harmless, but if you want to get rid of them take a look inside the VPK.

Other solution to the crash

Install Steam through Wine, then install L4D2 through that Steam. This way you won't have to play the bug-ridden, never-to-be-fixed Linux mess of a build + you'll be able to play online (unlike when using Proton on native Steam). But you'll have to set it all up first. In my experience installing Steam through Wine was tedious and the client itself is buggy. You'll also have to deal with having 2 copies of Steam. That is if you're using Steam for games other than L4D2.

This mod will be gone as soon as Valve decides to move their lazy asses and fix the crashing issue properly.
