SOME BACKSTORY
Back when Cold Stream released, Valve had released a port of Death Toll from L4D1 into L4D2. The port's layout however was based on the versus version, and they also edited out some details from the maps for the sake of either versus balance, or replacing random things with L4D2 Common Infected corpses (which clash heavily with the first game's setting). On top of it all, an infinite horde event was added in map 4, which was a normal holdout panic event before.
All in all, it was a decent port, but not only did it get rid of some map details, it was also the only version you could play in L4D2. The coop version of the maps with the original layouts and details weren't officially brought back ever.
Not until now.
THE ORIGINAL DEATH TOLL
This mod is a direct, minimal port of Death Toll's original coop maps from L4D1, straight from the first game's sdk folder, in the form of a custom map. Here's what I've done:
- Preserved all original layouts, L4D1 item locations, and even the old exploits (welcome back Jesus Rock!).
- Many L4D2 item locations from the official port have been added, but they only spawn L4D2-exclusive items (exceptions are primary weapons and pistols).
- Mudmen on Chapter 2 and Fallen Survivors on map 4 like in the official port
- Basic Versus support (since it's a coop map, things will be harder for the infected).
- No model and texture replacements included, so use any mods you'd like.
NOTES
- Some godspots might not work as well as in L4D1 given that L4D2 has different bot pathing and such.
- If you want some props to look like how they did in the first game, you will need to get some mods. Refer to the pinned discussion below for some recommendations of mine.
- The L4D1 Mutations will spawn L4D1 items where L4D2 ones go. Go to the pinned discussion below if you want edited versions I made that remove the L4D2 item locations instead for a far more accurate experience.
- The maps also use the original nav meshes but slightly edited, so be aware that bots could act funky in a few areas.
