Improvement Minecarts!
Turn ordinary Minecraft railways into a proper vanilla-style transport system with faster minecarts, chain-coupled trains, bidirectional consists, stations, terminal shuttles, cargo handling and redstone signals.
- Reach up to 18 blocks/s on suitable straight rails, configurable from 16 to 20 blocks/s in the full engine builds.
- Couple up to eight minecarts into one train using ordinary iron chains.
- See real visible chain couplers between cars. In 1.3 the displays update without teleport interpolation, fixing the visible chain lag that could appear at high speed.
- Reverse a coupled train from either end with
/trigger im.reversewhile riding it. The datapack flips the internal carriage order, rebuilds the path history from the new leader and reverses the current motion. - Build push-pull trains with locomotives or control cars on either end without physically turning the consist around.
- Use furnace minecarts as practical locomotives for passenger and freight trains.
- Create normal stations from the configured station block and place a sign beside the rail to announce the station name.
- Build terminal stations with a gold block beneath the rail. Trains stop for the configured dwell time, reverse automatically and depart in the opposite direction — ideal for metro, shuttle and point-to-point lines.
- Use hay and copper speed zones, cargo platforms made from hoppers and barrels, and powered redstone lamps as stop signals.
- Configure the full engine through the clickable English / Russian / Ukrainian operator menu with diagnostics and recovery tools.
- Keep train connections through temporary chunk unloads instead of automatically breaking the consist.
No client mod, resource pack or experimental world setting is required.
What's new in 1.3
1.1 — Train Dynamics
Visible chain lag at high speed has been fixed. Train reversal is now a real part of the consist system rather than a visual trick: the opposite end becomes the leader and the follower history is rebuilt in the new direction.
1.2 — Stations
Stations can announce names from nearby signs. A gold block beneath the rail creates a terminal station with the normal configurable dwell time.
1.3 — Automation
Terminal stations can automatically reverse and dispatch trains, making simple A ⇄ B shuttle lines possible with no command blocks and no client-side additions.
Quick start
Place the correct ZIP for your Minecraft version into the world's datapacks folder and run:
/minecraft:reload
Players can open the help menu with:
/trigger im.menu
Reverse a coupled train while riding any car with:
/trigger im.reverse
Operators can open the full configuration menu with:
/function improvement_minecarts:config
Coupling minecarts
- Place stationary minecarts on a straight, level section of track roughly two blocks apart.
- Hold an iron chain.
- Aim at the first minecart and sneak.
- Stop sneaking, aim at the second minecart and sneak again.
- Continue attaching additional cars to the tail of the train.
Use shears while sneaking to uncouple a train.
Stations and terminals
A normal station uses the station block selected in the operator settings. Put a sign directly beside the station rail and its first line will be announced as the station name.
A gold block directly beneath the rail is always treated as a terminal. The train stops, waits for the normal station dwell time, changes its leader to the opposite end and departs back along the line.
Signals and cargo
A powered redstone lamp beneath the rail is a STOP signal, so your own redstone can control junctions, occupancy logic or dispatching.
Cargo platform layout:
rail → hopper → barrel
Version compatibility
Minecraft changed datapack commands, folders and text-component formats several times, so 1.3 is distributed as separate builds instead of pretending that one ZIP is safe everywhere.
- 1.20.1–1.20.2 Legacy: compatibility engine without function macros. Includes the headline 1.1–1.3 features (synchronized chains, reversal, named stations and automatic terminal reversal), but uses vanilla minecart speed and a simpler follower system.
- 1.20.3–1.20.6: full high-speed/history engine with the pre-1.21 folder and text-component formats.
- 1.21–1.21.4: full engine with the pre-1.21.5 chat-component format.
- 1.21.5–26.2: full modern engine.
- 26.3: dedicated build for the 26.3 datapack format and block-state/predicate changes.

Current limitations
The configurable 16–20 blocks/s boost is designed primarily for suitable straight track. Curves, slopes and unusual layouts may still use more vanilla-like movement. Redstone block reservation and fully automatic route finding are not included yet; player-built redstone remains responsible for complex junction logic. Portals and unusual teleportation can interfere with coupled trains, so uncoupling first is recommended.
