Star Trek Force Field

⚠️ Requires BepInEx and StationeersLaunchPad to run ⚠️ In multiplayer, the host and every player must be on the same version of the mod ⚠️ Version 0.2 adds the Containment Field: please report any issues

This is a fun, flavour mod inspired by Star Trek.

This mod adds the Force Field, an open archway in the style of a starship corridor, with a lit strip all the way round its opening. While the field is up, air cannot pass through it, though there is nothing there to see. Touch it and it sparkles. It also adds the Containment Field, a wall console that closes the room it is in to explosions.

Features

The Force Field

  • Holds air while it is up, like a shut door, with nothing solid in the opening
  • Fills one wall square and is placed as the Composite Door is. Both faces look the same
  • Three bigger sizes from the same kit: see below
  • Normally nothing is seen in the opening. Where someone or something touches the field or goes through it, a patch of small blue-white flecks shows at that spot and fades
  • The whole field flickers into view as it comes up, and again as it goes down
  • The strip round the opening is white while the field is up and dark while it is down
  • Needs power (50 W for each wall square): one port, for power and data both, at the foot of the front face to the left of the opening
  • When the power goes, the field drops and the air escapes. It does not come back by itself: raise it again from its screen

Four sizes

  • Force Field: one wall square, with an opening 0.87 m wide and 1.74 m tall. 50 W, one kit
  • Force Field (Double): two squares side by side, the width of a corridor, with an opening 3.3 m wide. 100 W, two kits
  • Force Field (Medium): two squares, one above the other, like the Medium Hangar Door, with an opening 3.74 m tall. 100 W, two kits
  • Force Field (Large): three squares, one above the other, like the Large Hangar Door, with an opening 5.74 m tall. 150 W, three kits
  • All four work the same way. Choose the size while holding the kit, and hold a stack of kits for the bigger ones

Two modes

  • Air only: people and loose things pass straight through. Walk out of your base without an airlock
  • Solid: people and things are stopped as well. A field made solid with someone standing in it waits for them to step out

The screen

  • The small screen beside the opening, on each face, shows the field's name, set with the labeller, and its state: FIELD UP, FIELD DOWN or LOCKED, with its mode under it
  • The FIELD key raises and lowers the field, the MODE key switches between Air only and Solid, and the LOCK key locks and unlocks it. No logic circuit needed
  • A locked field cannot be lowered or changed from its screen
  • To logic it is one of the game's doors: Open is 1 while the field is switched off

New in 0.2: the Containment Field

  • A wall console that closes the room it is in to explosions. A blast outside does not harm what is in the room, a blast inside does not harm what is outside, and the room's own walls, floor and ceiling are spared both ways
  • Three levels, each holding more and using more power: level 1 holds explosives, level 2 an antimatter pod as well, and only level 3 a warp core breach (with the Star Trek Warp Core, from its version 0.2)
  • Every blast it holds drains its integrity, which fills again from the power supply. A blast too great for its level, or for what is left, collapses the field and goes through, and the field must cool before it can be raised again
  • A blast held inside a room breaks no ground. While the field is up the room's walls do not give way to pressure either, at a cost in integrity
  • At rest all that is seen is a faint line along the room's edges, in the colour of the level. Where a blast is held, a ring of crackling light runs out over the walls
  • Walk into a wall of the room, or throw something at it, from inside or outside, and the field flares and sounds at that spot, as the Force Field does. For show: it costs nothing
  • With the Star Trek Phaser: the field stops the beam at every side of the room, doorways included, on every setting. Nothing gets in or out, your own shots included, and steady fire slowly drains the field
  • It stays up with a door open. If a wall is removed the field drops, and comes back by itself when the room is closed again
  • Power: 100 W, and while the field is up 50, 150 or 500 W more, by level, for each 2 m cell of the room, and more again while it refills. A room of up to 200 cells
  • Keys on its screen: LEVEL down, LEVEL up, and RAISE / DROP. To logic: Activate raises and drops it, Setting is the level, Ratio the integrity
  • Kit (Containment Field) is made in the Electronics Printer: 5 Steel, 10 Copper, 5 Gold, 5 Electrum, 5 Silicon

With the Star Trek Phaser

  • A field that is up stops a phaser's beam, in either mode, and flares where it is struck

Making it

  • Kit (Force Field) is made in the Autolathe: 7 Iron, 5 Copper, 2 Gold. One kit for each wall square

Settings

  • DropDelay (2.0): seconds a field can be without power before it is switched off for good, and has to be raised again from its screen. Air escapes for as long as the power is away either way
  • The Containment Field's ratings, integrity, power, recharge, cooldowns, room size limit and whether it holds walls against pressure are settings too, each explained in the config file

In multiplayer the host's settings decide.
