Star Trek Holodeck

⚠️ Requires BepInEx and StationeersLaunchPad to run ⚠️ In multiplayer, the host and every player must be on the same version of the mod ⚠️ First release: please report any issues

This is a fun, flavour mod inspired by Star Trek.

This mod adds the Holodeck Console. Mount it on a wall inside a room, switch it on, and the room becomes a holodeck: first the black and amber grid, then, at the press of a key, any of 19 programs, from a forest clearing to a beach at sunrise, each a place that seems to run on far past the walls.

Features

The Holodeck Console

  • A wall console with a lit screen, placed as the game's own Console is, with one port underneath for power and data both
  • Fills whatever room it is in, of any shape: walls, floor and ceiling. The room has to be closed in, and no bigger than 300 cells
  • Its power switch turns the holodeck on and off
  • Its screen names a program. The arrow keys either side of the name step through the list, and the wide key under it runs the program named, or ends it if it is the one running
  • Stepping through the list changes nothing in the room: the screen says READY or RUNNING under each name
  • Logic can choose too, through Mode: 0 is the grid, and 1 to 19 run a program by its number on the screen
  • A strip on the console is amber while the holodeck is showing, and red if the console is not in a closed room, or the room is too big
  • One console to a room: with two, the one built first runs the room

The grid

  • Black panels half a metre square, divided by glowing amber lines, over every side of the room
  • Doors and the console stay in plain sight
  • Spreads over the room from the console as it is switched on, behind a soft glowing edge, and draws back to the console as it is switched off

The programs

  • 19 places to stand in: Forest Clearing, Open Meadow, Green Hill, Lakeside, Waterfall Grotto, Alpine Valley, Highland Hills, Misty Pines, Autumn Forest, Desert Night Sky, Moonlit Field, Sandy Beach, Secluded Cove, Snowy Forest, Snowfield, Desert Sands, Rocky Desert, Mountain Dawn, Beach Sunrise
  • What is far away stays far away as you walk about, and the ground lies on the room's own floor
  • A program spreads over the grid from the console, and gives way to the grid again the same way
  • Going from one program to another, the grid always comes back first, and the new program then spreads over it
  • The room's doors and the console are hidden behind a running program, so the scene is unbroken. Come within a metre of one and the program melts away from it, and closes over it again as you walk off
  • A door that is open always shows, so you can see who is coming in
  • Things dropped in the room, and everyone in it, are seen standing in the scene

Mood

  • Being in a holodeck that is running a program, whichever it is, lifts your mood
  • While it does, a green smiling sign shows among the game's own status signs, and says why under the pointer

Power

  • The console draws 50 W for itself while it is switched on
  • Showing the grid costs 20 W more for each 2 m cell of the room, and running a program 50 W for each: a room of 15 cells is 350 W on the grid and 800 W with a program running
  • Without power the holodeck goes, and comes back when the power does

Sounds

  • One as the grid comes online, and one as a program ends: when the console is switched off, and each time the grid and a program change places

Making it

  • Kit (Holodeck Console) is made in the Autolathe: 5 Iron, 5 Copper, 2 Gold

Settings

Read on the host:

  • PowerBase (50): watts the console draws for itself whenever it is switched on
  • PowerPerCell (20): watts more for each cell of the room while it shows the grid
  • PowerPerCellProgram (50): watts more for each cell of the room while it runs a program
  • MoodBonus (0.0017): how much mood rises each time the game works it out, in a holodeck running a program. 0 turns it off

Each player's own, changing only what they see:

  • RevealDistance (1): metres from a door or the console at which a program melts away from it. 0 never hides them
  • MaxCells (300): the biggest room a holodeck will fill, in 2 m cells
  • GridSpacing (0.5): metres between the grid's lines
  • LineWidth (0.03): the width of the grid's lines, in metres
  • Inset (0.15): metres the holodeck stands inside the room's walls and ceiling
  • FloorLift (0.01): metres the holodeck's floor lies above the room's real floor
  • FloorInset (0.06): the same, where the room has no built floor
  • SkipDoors (true): leave doorways open in the grid
  • SteadyProgram (true): keeps a program sharp as you walk. Turn it off only if a program looks wrong
  • Layer (1) and Diagnostics (true): for tracking down problems

In multiplayer the host's settings decide what the holodeck costs and what it does for mood.

Good to know

  • A program is a picture, not a place: you cannot walk past the room's walls
  • Mode 1 is still the forest, so a holodeck saved in the first version comes back as it was
  • Windows in the room's walls are covered while the holodeck is on
  • Works with SEGI lighting

Goes well with

Star Trek Replicator: make almost any item from power alone.

Star Trek Phaser: a hand phaser with four settings, Stun, Kill, Heat and Mine.
