You're Thirsty

You can now drink, store and purify water from water sources in Valheim!

This is a complete hydration system. Your thirst drains constantly and not all water is safe. Boil your water to make sure it's safe to drink, or your character will suffer the consequences. Use containers to carry water and barrels to store it.

Version 2.1.3 works with Valheim 1.0.20.

The Thirst System

• Your hydration is shown at the bottom right of the screen: a water-drop icon and a percentage. The number turns yellow at 40% and red at 20%, and the icon changes to the thirsty icon at 40%.
• Hydration goes down at a steady rate: from 100% to 0% in 35 minutes on Casual (45 on Easy, 22 on Hard). Walking, sprinting, swimming and fighting all drain it at the same rate.
• At 40% you get a warning, and at 10% "You are dying of thirst!". Being thirsty has no other effect yet: no slowdown and no combat penalty.
• Hydration is not saved yet. Every time you start the game you begin at 100%.

Drinking

• Clean water restores 20% hydration (25% on Easy, 15% on Hard). It also gives back 20% of your stamina at once and gives you Hydrated for 160 seconds: running and jumping use 20% less stamina.
• Dirty water is a last resort. It costs you about 10% hydration, unless you are badly dehydrated, when it brings you back up to 36% at most. It also makes you sick: you puke, the screen flashes, Hydrated is removed, and Dirty Water slows you by 20% for 160 seconds (10% on Easy, 30% on Hard). In the Black Forest, Plains and Mistlands it can also lower your stamina and/or health regeneration. In the Swamp, Ocean and Ashlands you lose 5 health instead.
• A drink takes 4 seconds (3 on Easy, 5 on Hard). Moving or starting to swim cancels it.

Water Containers

All crafted at a workbench. A waterskin or horn gives one drink per unit of water.

A bucket with water in it slows you by 30% while it is in your inventory (20% on Easy, 40% on Hard). Each container shows a small water bar on its inventory slot.

Build Pieces

Built with the hammer near a workbench.

• Barrel (10 Wood): stores water at your base, 12 units (16 on Easy, 10 on Hard). Fill it using buckets and other containers. Its hover text shows how much is in it. It does not collect rain.
• Stone Well (20 Stone, 10 Wood): never runs dry, always clean.
• Boiling Bucket: buildable after collecting boiling water from a cauldron (see below).

Cauldron Boiling

1. The Boil Water option appears in the cauldron's menu (E on a cauldron). With a bucket of water in your inventory, it empties the bucket into the cauldron.
2. The water boils for 150 seconds (90 on Easy, 210 on Hard). Looking at the cauldron shows a live countdown.
3. When the countdown is done, choose Collect Boiled Water in the cauldron's menu with an empty bucket in your inventory. You get a bucket of boiling water.
4. Let it cool for 60 seconds (30 on Easy, 90 on Hard): either use your hammer to place it on the ground and press E on it when it is cool, or just keep it in your inventory. Either way you end up with a bucket of purified, clean water.

Controls

Both keys can be changed in the BepInEx config (Drink from Water and Container Action).

Crouch (CTRL) at the water's edge or in shallow water, look at the water and press E (not while swimming):

• with a waterskin or horn in your hand that is not full: fills it;
• otherwise, with a bucket in your inventory that is not full: fills the bucket;
• otherwise: you drink.

E anywhere else: empties the bucket, waterskin or horn in your hand. This includes pressing E on a door, chest or anything else. It does not happen when you are looking at a cauldron or standing near a barrel.

G: drinks one unit from the waterskin or horn in your hand.

Near a barrel (within 4 m) G and E work on the barrel instead:

• G with a bucket of water in your inventory: pours the bucket into the barrel;
• G with a waterskin or horn holding water in your hand: pours it into the barrel (so you cannot drink with G next to a barrel);
• G or E with an empty waterskin or horn: fills it from the barrel;
• E with a bucket of water in your hand: pours it into the barrel.

At a well, E fills the bucket, waterskin or horn in your hand with clean water.

Difficulty Modes

Set DifficultyLevel in the BepInEx config to Easy, Casual (the default, recommended starting point) or Hard, and the numbers are filled in for you every time the game starts. Custom lets you set every value manually: choose Custom before making manual changes, or the preset values will overwrite yours.
