About RunestoneSigns
From ThunderstoreBETA: Dress vanilla wooden signs with 1,024 bundled storage designs. Eight styles, searchable picker, previews and vanilla restore. Preserves native text. Real multiplayer remains unverified.
Runestone Signs 0.1.5
Version 0.1.5 adds clearance between the bottom buttons, preview group and decorative panel borders. Full-width sign rendering and all artwork remain unchanged. See RELEASE-v0.1.5.md.
Give your vanilla wooden storage signs a matching illustrated design. Runestone Signs includes 1,024 bundled images: eight styles with the same 128 labels. Choose a style, search for a label, preview it, and apply it to the sign you are targeting.
Beta: tested in an isolated local game. Real multiplayer, dedicated servers and broad modpack compatibility have not yet been validated.
Choose a sign
- Stand within normal interaction range and aim at a vanilla wooden sign.
- Press Left Ctrl + K to open the picker.
- Choose a style. Type in the search box or use the page arrows.
- Click a label to preview it, then press Apply.
Cancel, X and Escape discard the staged selection and close the picker. Restore vanilla removes the applied design and reveals the saved native sign text. The normal Use interaction still edits that text.
The panel includes generated Norse artwork, a carved title, clear selection states and a dedicated icon. Its labels and search field remain live text. Mouse and keyboard are the supported picker controls.
Eight styles
Oak, Ironbound Oak, Dvergr Workshop, Druid Grove, Royal Longhouse, Frosthold, Ashen Forge, and Harvest Hearth. Every style has 128 matching labels. Images are bundled locally; no SignLink upload service or external image URL is used.
Installation and configuration
Requires BepInExPack_Valheim. The declared dependency is version 5.4.2351, which was used for testing with Valheim 1.0.21.
With r2modman or Thunderstore Mod Manager, install this package and its dependency, then launch modded. For this unpublished ZIP, use Import local mod in the manager's settings and import the complete ZIP into a new test profile. Ensure BepInExPack_Valheim is installed in that profile.
For manual installation, close Valheim and merge the ZIP's BepInEx folder into the chosen BepInEx installation. Keep RunestoneSigns.dll and its entire assets folder together under BepInEx/plugins/RunestoneSigns.
After the first launch, the shortcut can be changed in BepInEx/config/local.runestonesigns.cfg. Change it if another mod uses Ctrl+K. Test with a new disposable character and world; a mod-manager profile does not create a separate Valheim save store.
Saved signs and access
The mod stores a stable style/label identifier on the sign, preserving its native text and ownership. It does not send image bytes over the network. Edits check distance and ward permissions and are handled by the current sign owner. Only vanilla wooden signs are eligible.
The editing player and current sign owner need the same mod/catalog for an edit to complete. Other players need the mod to see the artwork. An owner without the mod will not acknowledge an edit; the picker times out. Missing or unknown designs fall back to vanilla text. These are the implemented behaviors; remote-owner and dedicated-server operation still need testing.
Full images load lazily with a bounded shared cache, and the picker uses a separate bounded thumbnail cache. If capacity is exhausted, a sign can show native text until an image becomes available. Compressed download size is not a measurement of runtime memory.
Compatibility and testing
SignLink 1.2.0 was loaded during local tests. Signs carrying SignLink image markers are excluded from this mod's editing and rendering. Full SignLink image-upload workflows and simultaneous picker windows remain untested; this is not a blanket compatibility guarantee.
Local checks covered all 1,024 full images and thumbnails, all eight styles, apply/restore, native text and ownership preservation, stale edits, cache bounds, reopening, cancellation and interrupted UI state. The 0.1.2 header was inspected at 1024x768, 1280x800 and 1920x1080; its persisted test sign loaded and rendered after restart. Gamepad support, GPU peak memory, remote multiplayer and broad modpack testing remain outstanding.
The bundled artwork and interface were generated for this project. No game assemblies, test harness, BepInEx/Harmony binaries or extracted native game assets are included. Valheim and its trademarks belong to their owners.
