About Wolf Riding

From Thunderstore

Ride your wolf like a lox: trot, run, bite and leap. Saddle, light and heavy barding and saddlebags for wolves and Wolfborn, four qualities from the Mountains to the Ashlands, and a war harness that binds all three.

Wolf Riding – ride your wolf, armour it, load it up

Put a saddle on a tame wolf and ride it: it trots, runs, leaps and bites on your command. Give it light or heavy barding to send it into a fight, or saddlebags to carry your load. Every piece starts in the Mountains, where you meet your first wolves, and gets better with the materials of each biome after that. In the Mistlands you bind saddle, barding and bags into one war harness.

Works for wolves and for Wolfborn. No other mod is needed.

| Piece | What it does | Crafted at | Cost (quality 1) | |---|---|---|---| | Wolf Saddle | lets you ride the wolf | Forge (level 2) | 4 deer hide, 8 leather scraps, 3 wolf pelt, 4 iron | | Light Wolf Barding | armour and health, no slowdown | Forge (level 2) | 6 deer hide, 4 wolf pelt, 4 iron | | Heavy Wolf Barding | much more armour and health, slower | Forge (level 2) | 16 iron, 8 leather scraps, 3 wolf pelt, 2 chain | | Wolf Saddlebags | 6 to 16 slots of storage | Forge (level 2) | 6 deer hide, 6 leather scraps, 2 wolf pelt, 2 iron | | Light / Heavy War Harness | saddle, barding and bags in one | Black forge | a saddle, a barding and saddlebags of quality 3 or better, 10 linen thread, 4 blue jute, 4 iron |

Four qualities, four biomes

Each piece is upgraded like any vanilla item, but every quality is made at the station of its biome and asks for that biome's materials.

| Quality | Biome | Station | Materials (saddle) | |---|---|---|---| | 1 | Mountains | Forge, level 2 | deer hide, leather scraps, wolf pelt, iron | | 2 | Plains | Artisan table | lox pelt, linen thread, black metal | | 3 | Mistlands | Black forge | scale hide, carapace, blue jute | | 4 | Ashlands | Black forge, level 3 | asksvin hide, flametal, Morgen sinew |

The look changes with the quality: deer leather, iron and red wool in the Mountains; black leather, black metal and linen in the Plains; scale hide, carapace plates and blue jute in the Mistlands; asksvin hide and flametal in the Ashlands.

Putting tack on

  1. Tame a wolf.
  2. Use the piece on it: point at the wolf and press its hotbar key.
  3. To take it off, point at the piece (saddle, bags or barding) and press Shift + E. It drops beside the wolf with its quality.

A wolf wears one piece at a time. To ride, fight and carry at once, bind a war harness. Bags must be empty before they come off. A wolf that dies drops its tack and everything in its bags.

Riding

  1. Point at the saddle and press E to mount.
  2. Steer with the mouse: W trots, Shift runs, S stops, block turns on the spot.
  3. E gets you off.

| Key | On the wolf | |---|---| | Attack | a bite (10 mount stamina) | | Secondary attack | a lunging bite that hits 50 % harder (20 stamina) | | Jump | a leap forward (15 stamina) |

  • Running, biting and leaping use the wolf's stamina, shown next to its health like on the lox. Your riding skill halves the cost of running, as on the lox.
  • Out of breath: without stamina the wolf will not bite or leap until it has rested.
  • A ridden wolf does what you say. Standing still, it waits instead of running after enemies (config MountFightsOnItsOwn).

Barding

| Quality | Light: armour / health | Heavy: armour / health / speed | |---|---|---| | 1 | 10 / +15 % | 20 / +30 % / −15 % | | 2 | 16 / +20 % | 32 / +40 % / −14 % | | 3 | 22 / +25 % | 44 / +50 % / −12 % | | 4 | 28 / +30 %, fire resistant | 56 / +60 % / −10 %, fire resistant |

  • Light barding is a padded coat with studs: it never slows the wolf.
  • Heavy barding adds overlapping plates over back and neck and a brow plate. Better smithing makes them lighter, so the heavy barding slows less at higher quality.

Saddlebags

Point at the bags and press E: they open like a chest. Quality 1 holds 6 slots, quality 2 holds 9, quality 3 holds 12 and quality 4 holds 16. While someone rides the wolf, nobody else can open its bags.

War harness

The light and the heavy war harness bind a saddle, a barding of that weight and saddlebags into one piece. Binding needs all three parts at quality 3 or better. The harness takes the quality all three reach, and the black forge uses the cheapest parts that get there. A harness can then be upgraded to quality 4.

The real thing

  • Armour works like yours. A hit of more than twice the armour loses the armour value; a smaller hit is cut to damage² / (4 × armour). 100 slash against heavy barding of quality 1 (armour 20) leaves 80.
  • Health is a share of the wolf's own, after Wolfborn level bonuses. A wounded wolf keeps its health fraction when tack goes on or off.
  • Mount stamina: the saddle gives 120, 150, 180 or 210 stamina. A running wolf uses 1 per second, like the lox.
  • What the mod does not change: how fast wolves grow tame, how long they stay fed and how they fight on their own.

Configuration

BepInEx/config/zap.wolfriding.cfg

Gameplay (server-synced, admin only)

  • Wolves: creatures that can wear tack (default Wolf,Wolfborn*).
  • MountFightsOnItsOwn: a ridden wolf may chase enemies while standing (default off).
  • RunStaminaDrain, BiteStamina, HeavyBiteStamina, LeapStamina, LeapUp, LeapForward: riding costs and the leap.
  • ArmorScale, HealthScale: scale all barding.
  • Quality1 … Quality4: station per quality as prefab:level.
  • SaddleQ1 … SaddlebagsQ4, WarHarnessQ3, WarHarnessQ4: recipes as Item:amount,Item:amount.

Client

  • ShowRidingHints: shows the riding keys when you mount.

Multiplayer and compatibility

  • Everyone on a server needs the mod. The tack is stored in the wolf's own data, so all players see the same.
  • Better Riding: on a wolf, Wolf Riding's bite and leap replace Better Riding's mount attack and jump, so nothing fires twice. Lox, asksvin and dragons keep Better Riding's controls.
  • Wolfborn: Wolfborn wear and carry tack like wolves; their fur colour does not tint the tack.
