Rektology Backrooms
WORK IN PROGRESS. This is an early build that we're actively developing and testing on the Rektology servers. Expect placeholder visuals (vanilla pieces stand in for the final Backrooms look), balance changes, and config changes between updates. Bug reports and feedback are welcome in the comments.
What it is
A Backrooms event for any DayZ map. Step into a torn-off fragment of Level 0 that has no business standing in a field, wait a few seconds, and you noclip out of reality into procedurally generated levels built high above the map. You have 30 minutes. Go deeper for better loot, but if you haven't found a way out when the time runs out, you die in there and everything you brought in stays with you.
Current features
- Four levels, each harder than the last: Level 0 (endless yellow rooms), Level 1 (a warehouse of halls and pillars), Level 2 (grey maintenance tunnels under dim, cold light) and Level 3 (an abandoned facility under red emergency lighting)
- Procedurally generated, seeded layouts streamed in chunks around players, with odd furniture left where it shouldn't be
- Lobbies on every level: a green door back to the map, a red door further down. Finding them is up to you
- Real lighting inside the levels: flat fluorescent light that never changes with the time of day, muted weather, and no altitude cold
- Blackouts: the lights flicker and die, and all you have is the light you brought. Deeper levels black out more often
- Entities built on vanilla creatures steered through the maze: the Watcher only moves when nobody is looking at it, a lost expedition in yellow NBC suits patrols in groups, and the Lurker only exists in the dark. It always knows where you are. Point a light at it
- Entity hits are punishing, not lethal: they knock you out instead of killing you
- Loot that gets better the deeper you go, up to a rare tier on the deepest level
- 30-minute runs: warnings as time runs out, then the lights go out for good. Logging out doesn't save you: the clock keeps running and you come back to where you left
- Arrivals happen in the dark, so you never fall through a level that hasn't loaded yet
- Safety nets: fall guard, and players who log out inside are moved out on login
- No dependencies: vanilla only, works alongside other mods
Planned
- The real look and sound: custom portal and elevator models, wallpaper, carpet, buzzing lights, ambience
- More entities and level types
- Scheduled events: a portal that opens and closes, a fresh layout per event
- Leaderboards for the deepest runs
- Optional integrations (zones, banking, reputation) as separate add-ons
Server setup
- Load as a normal mod (client and server), not a server-only mod. Copy the key from the keys folder.
- Config files are created on first boot in profiles/Rektology/Backrooms/: Backrooms.json (levels, portal, exits, events), Loot.json (loot tables) and Entities.json (entities and spawn rules). Existing files are never overwritten; delete Loot.json to get the new rare tier.
- Add one enabled entry to Portals in Backrooms.json with the map position of the entrance.
- Place the levels over land in a quiet corner of your map. A level height of 0 means automatic. We recommend AutoHeightClearance 1300: high enough that the levels can't be seen from the ground.
- Leave Levels out of Backrooms.json to get the four built-in levels (and any new ones in future updates).
Known limitations
- Placeholder art throughout (the portal and lobby doors are vanilla pieces for now)
- No sound yet
- Entities are vanilla infected under the hood, so some vanilla infected behaviour shows through
The Backrooms is a community creepypasta concept. This mod is an original take and is not affiliated with any film, series or other project.
