Settler Bubbles

Make your settlement feel alive.

Settler Bubbles adds readable, context-aware speech and thought bubbles above settlers and visiting humans.

Settlers can hold connected conversations with replies, reactions and conclusions. Their dialogue responds to their work, needs, surroundings, recent events and the people or animals around them.

Features

 • Large library of context-aware dialogue
 • English plus 10 additional languages
 • Multi-turn conversations with matching replies and conclusions
 • Session-based social memory
 • Consistent personal opinions about villagers, animals and food
 • Conversations about villagers, animals and favourite meals
 • Thought bubbles for needs and moods
 • Reactions to attacks, injuries, food shortages, rain, strikes and victories
 • Dedicated dialogue for mining, building, cooking, caring, hauling and guarding
 • Dialogue for hunger, recreation, visitors and nighttime
 • Distinct, high-priority combat shouts
 • Personality-aware dialogue
 • Settlement-wide repetition protection
 • Adjustable 14–22 px font sizes
 • Game Default, Pixel and Smooth font styles
 • Automatic font sizing based on screen resolution
 • Smart bubble density that prioritizes important and nearby bubbles
 • Configurable maximum number of visible bubbles
 • Adjustable frequency, visibility distance and duration
 • Individual settings for dialogue categories
 • Manual bubble-language selection
 • Singleplayer and multiplayer support
 • Enabled automatically when the game starts
 • Public Java API for add-on mods and compatibility integrations

Living conversations

Settlers remember recent conversations during the current play session.

They are less likely to repeat the same topic, immediately talk to the same person again or contradict an opinion they expressed earlier. Repetition protection also works across the loaded settlement, helping conversations feel more natural in busy colonies.

Social memories and opinions are temporary and reset when the session ends. Nothing is added to your world save.

Settings and commands

Settler Bubbles starts enabled automatically.

Open the settings menu with:

/bubbles settings
You can assign an optional shortcut under Necesse's Controls settings. The shortcut is unbound by default to prevent conflicts with other mods.

The settings menu includes:

Font size and font style

Automatic resolution-based font sizing

Bubble language

Frequency

Visibility distance

Bubble duration

Maximum visible bubbles

Individual dialogue categories
Available session commands:
/bubbles
/bubbles on
/bubbles off

These three commands only affect the current play session.

Troubleshooting and testing commands:

/bubbles debug
/bubbles smoke

/bubbles debug displays the active version, settings, language, memory status and possible chatter-mod conflicts.

/bubbles smoke starts a 14-step visual test sequence that lets you quickly inspect the different bubble styles and priorities. Enter the command again to stop the test.

Languages

By default, bubbles follow the language selected in Necesse. You can also choose a different bubble language manually in the mod settings.

 • English
 • Brazilian Portuguese
 • German
 • Spanish
 • French
 • Dutch
 • Polish
 • Russian
 • Simplified Chinese
 • Japanese
 • Korean

Unsupported game languages automatically fall back to English.

Translation corrections and suggestions are always welcome.

Multiplayer

Settler Bubbles supports hosted multiplayer games and dedicated servers.

All players and the server should use the same version of the mod. Dialogue is selected by the server and synchronized between connected players.

Visual settings and the selected bubble language are configured separately by each player.

Compatibility

Settler Bubbles does not store additional information inside your world save.

It can safely be added to an existing world. Disabling or removing the mod will not damage the world.

Settings from earlier versions are migrated automatically.

Other mods can add their own dialogue through the included versioned Java API. The public API remains compatible with API version 1.

Requirements

 • Settler Bubbles version: 1.2.0
 • Necesse version: 1.3.2
