Everyday Relationships
Build friendships, fall in love, develop rivalries, and celebrate a wedding together in Project Zomboid Build 42.21+ multiplayer.
Everyday Relationships adds persistent relationships between player characters, with shared progression, editable conversations, gifts, and a wedding ceremony.
Relationships and progression
Each pair of characters has three separate relationship scores: - Friendship — build trust through conversations, shared memories, and personal exchanges. - Love — grow closer through romantic conversations, holding hands, and embraces. - Enmity — develop a rivalry through disagreements and verbal confrontations.
Scores range from 0 to 200, with additional interactions unlocking at 50, 100, 150, and 200 points. Progress belongs to the relationship, so both players see the same score.
Friendships can be formed with multiple people. Romantic relationships are exclusive to one partner at a time. Reaching a score threshold does not automatically create a friendship, partnership, engagement, or marriage.
Conversations and interactions
Choose from 40 social interactions, including 30 original conversation topics distributed across friendship, romance, and rivalry.
New conversations include a suggested opening line and response. Both players can edit their own words before sending them, and the exchange is saved in their relationship history.
These are player-written text exchanges rather than automatically generated NPC responses. The recipient can accept or decline an invitation.
Completed interactions award +2 or +3 points, depending on the interaction, with a shared one-game-hour reward cooldown per relationship track. Switching topics or taking turns as the initiator does not bypass that cooldown.
Engagement and weddings
A partnership can lead to a separate engagement proposal, followed by a ceremony that both players participate in.
The wedding includes: - Personal vows written by each player. - A chosen ceremony location. - Mutual confirmation of the ceremony stages. - Manual exchange of selected rings. - A wedding embrace and kiss. - An exchange of selected gifts. - Final confirmation of the marriage.
After the ceremony, the couple receives named rings marked with the wedding date, marriage certificates containing their shared wedding memory, anniversary notifications, and decorative fireworks.
Holding hands and affectionate embraces remain available through relationship progression. The kiss is reserved for the wedding ceremony.
Gifts
Select an item from your inventory through a dedicated gift window and offer it to another player. The recipient must agree before the item is transferred.
A successful gift awards up to +20 love points for romantic partners or +20 friendship points for friends, without exceeding the 200-point maximum.
Each pair can exchange one successful gift every 48 game hours. This cooldown is shared in both directions. Declined invitations and failed transfers do not start it.
Equipped items, favourites, containers, keys, and protected wedding or commemorative items cannot be selected as ordinary gifts.
Notes, memories, and loss
Keep private notes about other characters and revisit your relationship history, including completed conversations and important milestones.
If a spouse dies, the surviving character retains a record of the marriage, and the spouse’s wedding ring can receive a commemorative marking. A new character does not automatically inherit a previous character’s relationships.
Rivalries
Declaring a rivalry establishes the enemy relationship and grants a one-time +20 enmity bonus.
Further progression comes through consensual verbal scenes, from disagreements and pointed remarks to more serious confrontations. These interactions increase enmity without reducing friendship or love scores.
Rivalries do not change PvP settings, safety settings, or damage. Ending a rivalry requires an accepted peace proposal.
Promises
Write custom promises and keep a shared record after the recipient accepts. Report fulfillment for the recipient to confirm, or agree to cancel without penalties.
Recipients can mark a promise as unfulfilled, reducing the relevant relationship score by up to 5 points. The promiser receives a one-time stress and unhappiness penalty, limited to once per 24 game hours, plus a temporary guilt indicator.
Promises have no automatic deadlines.
Keepsake letters
Write and sign a physical letter for your partner or spouse, preserving your words, names, and date. Letters can be transferred, stored, or left in the world.
Anyone can read them, but only the intended recipient receives a calming effect, limited to once per 24 game hours across all letters. Re-reading provides a smaller benefit.
The bonus ends after separation; letters from a deceased partner can retain a weaker memorial effect. Signed text cannot be edited.
How to use
Press F8, or use the world context menu, to open the relationships window.
Select another player, open Actions, and choose a relationship track and point threshold to view its interactions. Some actions require both characters to be nearby, available, and standing with empty hands.
