Hearing Aid

A wearable hearing aid for Deaf and Hard of Hearing survivors. While you wear it, you hear exactly like everyone else.

What it does

  • Deaf: while worn you hear world sounds, zombies, alarms, radios and chat like a hearing character. Take it off and the silence returns.
  • Hard of Hearing: while worn your hearing is back to normal (sandbox option, on by default).
  • No effect on characters who already hear normally.
  • A broken aid stops working.

Wearing it

  • Its own worn slot: blocks no clothing, and no hat, mask or helmet blocks it.
  • Visible in game: a beige behind-the-ear aid on both ears.
  • Hidden under anything that covers the ears: balaclavas, winter hats, earmuffs, hoods, helmets, full masks. Caps, beanies, glasses and face masks keep it visible. It keeps working while hidden.
  • Works with clothing mods: modded hoods, helmets, ski masks and similar headwear hide it too.
  • Your trait list shows Deaf (Hearing Aid) or Hard of Hearing (Hearing Aid) while it is on.

Getting one

  • Craft (Electrical 5): Earbuds, Amplifier, 2 Electronics Scrap, Electric Wire, with a screwdriver.
  • Loot: clinics, medical storage, pharmacies, bathroom cabinets, bedside tables, electronics stores and crates.
  • Rarely carried by zombies.
  • Dismantle it for 2 Electronics Scrap.

Sandbox options

  • Helps Hard of Hearing (default on).
  • Also hidden under / Never hidden under: item types (separated by ;) that should or should never hide the aid.
  • Debug logging (default off).

Multiplayer: the server decides, so every player hears the same way the server thinks they do.

Confirmed working on Build 42.20, singleplayer and multiplayer.
