It's a Trap!

Your base deserves better than a wall. 45 traps built from vanilla junk: spiked logs, punji pits, snares, glass carpets, jaw traps, drop cages, poison darts, fuel slicks, shock mats, radio lures, sentry shotguns, pot bombs and propane bombs. Zombies always trigger them and always get hurt. Animals and players can too, depending on your sandbox settings.

How it works

  • Learn: five very rare recipe magazines, one per volume, turn up in fitting places: hunting and survival stores, hardware and metal shops, labs, electronics stores, gun stores and military storage. Until you read one, its recipes stay hidden.
  • Craft: traps are endgame. They need lots of vanilla materials, kept tools and real skill levels (Trapping first, then Carpentry, Metalworking, Electrical, First Aid, Cooking or Aiming). You get a trap kit.
  • Place: right-click a square, It's a Trap! > Place trap here, or place it at your feet from the inventory. Tripwires take two clicks: start, then end, in a straight line.
  • Rearm cheaply: a fired trap needs Rearm: a couple of nails, a bit of twine, some gunpowder. Many mechanical traps rearm for free. Each trigger uses 1 durability. Broken traps can be repaired for half their materials or dismantled.
  • Pick up a disarmed trap to get the kit back, durability and loaded ammo included.

Triggers

  • Pressure: someone steps on the square.
  • Area: anywhere in a 2x2, 3x3 or 1x2 footprint.
  • Tripwire: anything crossing a straight line of up to 8 tiles (walls block placement).
  • Proximity: a motion sensor with a 2 to 6 tile radius.
  • Remote: craft the Remote Trap Detonator, right-click your remote traps to link them, then detonate them all from the inventory within 60 tiles.
  • Timer: counts down from placement or rearm.
  • Door: fires when the door on its square is opened.
  • Beacon: pulses noise every few seconds while its battery lasts.

Effects

Damage, deep wounds, glass, fractures, bleeding over time, knockdown, stagger, being held (snares, jaws, cages, nets: players can struggle free with Strength and Fitness), pits that hold zombies and may turn them into crawlers, poison, fire, explosions with falloff, shrapnel, electric shocks (grid, generator or a loaded car battery), noise lures, alarms, smoke, gas clouds, gunfire with real ammo you load, and chain reactions between your own traps.

The catalog

Vol. 1 - Rudimentary Carnage (Trapping 3-5): Spiked Log Swing, Punji Pit, False Floor Pit, Nail Board, Caltrops Field, Rope Snare, Tin Can Tripline, Glass Carpet, Doorway Brick Drop, Sapling Spike Whip, Barbed Wire Tangle, Log Deadfall. Vol. 2 - Mechanical Mayhem (Trapping 5-6): Jaw Trap, Drop Cage, Net Launcher, Dart Launcher, Poison Dart Launcher, Door Guillotine, Rolling Log Ramp, Spring Spear Wall, Scrap Blade Pendulum, Car Spring Catapult. Vol. 3 - Chemical & Fire (Trapping 6-7): Toxic Cocktail Cloud, Rat-Poison Spike Bed, Molotov Tripline, Fuel Slick and Spark Plate, Fire Pit, Battery Acid Splash, Pepper Smoke Bomb, Fertilizer Fume Trap. Vol. 4 - Electric Dreams (Trapping 7-9, Electrical 5-8): Shock Mat, Electrified Wire Line, Motion Sensor Siren, Radio Lure Beacon, Remote Relay Charge, Sentry Shotgun, Sentry Rifle Nest, Bug-Zapper Array, plus the Remote Trap Detonator. Vol. 5 - Boom (Trapping 8-10): Pressure Pot Bomb, Nail Bomb Tripline, Black Powder Can Mine, Directional Scrap Claymore, Propane Tank Bomb, Daisy Chain Charge, Firework Distraction.

Hidden traps & counterplay

Armed traps are hard to notice. Other players only get the trap's menu after spotting it: a chance every second based on Trapping and distance, and always when adjacent and sneaking. A spotted trap can be disarmed and stolen at half durability. Fail the Trapping check and it fires on you.

Sandbox options (page 'It's a Trap!')

  • Traps enabled: ON
  • Players trigger traps: ON / Players take damage: ON
  • Owner is immune: OFF / Safehouse & faction members immune: OFF
  • Respect PvP safety: ON (PvP off, Safety on or a non-PvP zone = other players' traps only make noise)
  • Animals trigger traps: ON / Animals take damage: ON
  • Zombie damage x1.0 / Player damage x1.0
  • Durability x1.0 / Rearm cost x1.0 (0 = free)
  • Recipe magazine rarity: Very rare (Rare, Normal, None)
  • Start with all trap recipes: OFF
  • Hidden traps: ON / Spot chance: 10% per second
  • Others can disarm and steal: ON
  • Allow explosive / fire / firearm traps: ON / ON / ON
  • Trap noise x1.0
  • Max traps per player: 0 (unlimited)
  • Traps work while the owner is offline: ON
  • Pit crawler chance: 35%
  • Scan interval: 200 ms / Traps checked per scan: 80

Zombies always trigger traps and always take damage, whatever you set.

Singleplayer & Multiplayer

Works in both. In multiplayer the server owns every trap: placing, rearming, disarming and triggering are all checked there (distance, owner, items, state, rate limit). Detection is a cheap throttled scan over armed traps only, and it never runs code per zombie.

Compatibility

  • Build 42 (42.21).
  • Standalone, no requirements. Only vanilla sprites, icons, sounds and items.
  • Adds items (kits, 5 magazines, a detonator), so removing it from a save deletes those items. Placed traps disappear with it.

Português (BR)

45 armadilhas feitas com itens vanilla, de estacas e fossos a sentinelas armadas e bombas de propano. Zumbis sempre disparam e sempre sofrem dano; animais e jogadores conforme o sandbox. As receitas vêm de 5 revistas muito raras. Fabricar é caro, rearmar é barato. Funciona em SP e MP (servidor autoritativo). Página de sandbox 'É uma Armadilha!'.
