Last Thoughts [B42]

Kentucky, 1993. Your survivor has a head full of things to say and nobody left to say them to. This mod adds an inner voice and the notes the dead left behind.

What's in it

  • Inner thoughts. Over 1,100 short lines appear faintly above your head: when you get hungry, cold, wet, bored, winded or scared, after a first kill, a long night alone, a bite, the first rain, the first snow, a thunderstorm, thick fog, a cold, a week, a month, a hundred days and a year survived, and more. Each moodle has its own lines for mild and severe. They change with your mood, profession and traits. Only you see them.
  • Not every time. Your survivor doesn't comment on every snack. Each kind of thought has its own chance and cooldown, a line won't repeat until you've seen the rest of its pool, and every new character gets a different personality, so two playthroughs don't sound the same.
  • Found notes. 80 handwritten notes, diary pages in series, and the backs of family photos turn up in houses and on the dead. Right-click and Read. Names and places are filled in when a note is found, so the same note reads differently in another world. A note won't show up twice in one world until the rest have been found.
  • Stash notes. Some notes point to a real building nearby, with distance and direction. A small stash is left there once, and a circle can be added to your map. The circle is removed when you find the stash.
  • Survivor's journal. Every character starts with a journal that writes itself: the first kill, kill counts, bites, fever, the first rain and snow, storms, found stashes and photos, and day milestones, each under the day it happened. Right-click and Read. When the character dies, the journal stays on the body with their whole story, so another survivor can find it and read it.

Sandbox and mod options

Thought chance, cooldowns and daily limit, note loot amount, corpse notes, stash share and distance, the map circle and the journal can all be tuned or turned off. In Mod Options you can show thoughts as subtitles instead, change the text size, or make them rarer.

Compatibility

  • Built for Project Zomboid 42.21. Other versions are not tested.
  • Tested in single player.
  • Multiplayer: built to run on the server (thoughts are only sent to the player who has them), but not yet tested with other players. If you run it on a server, please let me know how it goes.
  • Safe to add to an existing save. Removing it was tested on a test server: your character loads fine, mod notes disappear, and nothing else is lost. Stash items that were already placed stay, since they are vanilla items.
  • Vanilla items and vanilla map files are not changed.

Bugs and ideas

Found a bug or have an idea for a thought or a note? Leave a comment. I read them and keep the mod updated.

Works great with Old Life Matter

With Old Life Matter your survivor also thinks about the old job, cravings, nightmares and old habits fading. Each mod works on its own.

Languages

English, Russian, Turkish and German. The mod uses your game language automatically; anything missing falls back to English. I made this mod with AI support: the code, the English text and the Russian, Turkish and German translations. The idea, the design and the in-game testing are mine, and I keep improving it based on your feedback. If you are a creator and want to help improve a translation or add a new language, I will gladly accept it. Leave a comment or message me.

Support

Everything in this mod is free for everyone. There is no paid or early access content. If you want to support future updates, you can do it here:
