Vanilla only plumbs a sink from a barrel in the 3x3 directly above it. Barrel on the roof, sink downstairs, no option, however full it is.

Plumb a barrel in with a wrench and it feeds every fixture in the building. Twelve 400 liter barrels on the roof read as 4800 liters at the kitchen tap.

This page is the short version. Every button, color and setting is in How To Use. If your tap is dry, the FAQ is where to look first. What's broken right now is in Bug Reports and Issues. All three are pinned in the Discussions tab.

Where the barrel goes

Right-click the barrel and pick Plumb into house supply, with a pipe wrench on you. Then plumb the sink the vanilla way. Barrel first.

The option shows up on a building's roof, against its outside wall, or standing inside it. Then two rules decide what it reaches.

Down is free. A barrel feeds every floor below it, basement included. On the roof that's the whole house.

A generator pushes it up. Power the barrel's own square and it feeds its floor and everything above as well. Mains doesn't count.

No roof to stand it on? Build a floor over the room, go up, and put the barrel on that.

Running pipe

A shed, an outdoor tap, the house next door. Right-click a barrel, pick Show piped area, and lay pipe out to it, one iron pipe a tile. Vertical pipe climbs a wall a floor at a time. Anything the pipe touches joins the same supply, and a barrel or a sink standing on a pipe can be plumbed in, out in the yard too.

Pipe doesn't change the two rules. Water still only runs downhill unless a generator's pushing it.

What comes out of the tap

Barrels add up and drain together, and they all keep catching rain. Hold one back as a reserve and it's saved for last.

Whiskey on tap. Right-click a fixture, pick Plumbed liquid, and run whiskey, beer, wine, milk or juice to it instead. A barrel belongs to whatever's in it, so the bar sink and the kitchen tap can't touch each other's supply. That one came from Dirty in the comments.

Water dispensers plumb the other way around. Plumb an office cooler in and the barrels keep it full, with clean water even where they're tainted.

Mapped basements, bunkers and roofs all work, and so does a base you built yourself, once it's closed in and roofed.

Two things I can't do

A basement you dug has no room record, and the game won't plumb below ground without one.

Wall showers, the deluxe bath, dishwashers and chemical toilets aren't water fixtures in vanilla at all, so nothing can plumb them.

What it works with

If a mod plumbs its barrel the vanilla way, from overhead, it works with this, and the worst you should see is a duplicate right-click option. Mods that add barrels or tanks work for the same reason. I ask the game whether a thing holds fluid, so there's no list to be on. What fights it is a mod that plumbs fixtures itself, because that's the same question answered twice.

  • Useful Barrels is compatible. Its barrels join as whatever's in them, so a fuel barrel never turns up at the kitchen tap.
  • PlumbingFixed is compatible from v2.2.3. DuongC patched their own mod to stand down and draw on this one's supply. Update it first. They didn't have to do that.
  • Immersive Water Shutoff is compatible. Its author tested the pair and confirmed it.
  • LG Connect To Water Supply stacks with it. A fixture on the mains uses that until the town runs dry, then the barrels take over.
  • LG Extended Electricity agrees with this about barrels. One is either the water supply's or a generator's, never both.
  • Water Pipes is not compatible on the same fixture. Give each fixture to one system or the other. Piping Water Pipes into your roof barrels is fine.

One more worth having: Nick's Inventory Selection Fix. The base game keeps dropping whatever you've selected in your inventory, and plumbing makes it happen a lot more. That mod fixes it.

What you can change

Sandbox, under Extended Plumbing: how far a fixture looks when it isn't in a real building, which containers get filled instead of feeding, fixes for two base game bugs, and a log that says why each fixture did or didn't connect.

Putting it in, and taking it back out

Safe to add mid-save. Any barrel already feeding a plumbed sink gets connected up for you on the first load. Singleplayer, hosted multiplayer and dedicated server, on Build 42.20 or newer at both ends.

Taking it off needs one step first. To feed a tap from across a building I park a hidden water store above it, and that store is a real object in your save. Delete the mod while one is standing and the tap runs dry and stays dry.

The quick way. Play with -debug, right-click anywhere, and open LG Extended Plumbing under the bug icon. Uninstall: put every tap back does it and tells you if anything is left, and where. On a server it's admins only.

The long way.

  • switch Enable extended plumbing off in the sandbox options
  • walk your base so every part of it loads, and give it a moment
  • then remove the mod

Already pulled it and your sinks are dry? Put the mod back and do either one.
