A companion mod for Project A-Life [ALIFE NPCS] (Build 42.21+, A-Life 1.4.5 or newer): your own base and people, reputation that means something, and a world that goes on without you. Requires Project A-Life. Made for multiplayer, works in single player, and is safe to add to an existing save. It adds no items or tiles, so removing it won't break a save. Everything can be switched off or tuned on the Jeem Extension tabs of the sandbox options (settings named below in italics). Experimental parts start off. Full guide: every feature and setting, in the pinned Full guide thread under Discussions.
Quick start
[olist] [*]People button (left sidebar) > Bases > + New base: drag your grounds. Mark a building as Main (yours) or Quarters (your crew's: a whole building or just its bedrooms; beds decide how many can join). [*]Same window: click Guard posts, Body dump, Weapon stores or Materials store, then click tiles (stores go on a container). [*]Get a crew to Allied (gifts, donations, helping them) and pick Come live at our base in conversation. [*]People button (sidebar): give each person a guard post, weapon, training, job or mission. Hover a resident to see what they're doing. [/olist] Tip: leave one way in unbarricaded (residents unlock your doors, never break boards). More under right-click > [A-Life Jimmy].
Just want one thing?
Switch everything off and turn on just the part you want, e.g. Protect base areas. Switched-off features leave no menus behind; the guide lists ready-made setups.
Bases
Grounds plus Main and Quarters buildings, up to 8 named guard posts on any floor, a body dump, up to 4 weapon stores and a materials store, all from one window. Bases made in a vanilla faction belong to the whole faction. Inside: no NPC spawns, no looting, no break-ins, no strangers hanging about (except raiders and people fighting you). Protect base areas, Attackers can breach bases, Bases per player (2), Areas per base (6), Guard posts per base (8), Largest side (80 tiles).
Your people
- Recruited crews join your own A-Life faction and keep their names and looks. They're saved, and always count as allied to you.
- A schedule: three shifts a day; you or Auto-schedule set each resident's guard posts, work, training, trips and sleep on the Schedule tab.
- They hold their posts, hunt zombies inside, fight anyone hostile to you (calling each other over when outnumbered), carry the dead to the dump, rest in their own rooms (by the beds at night), unlock your doors and lock them behind them, and say what they're off to do.
- Weapons from your weapon store (they walk over and swap); gifted weapons get equipped.
- Specialties (medic, sniper, leader, ambusher, stealth) and training toward one. Jobs: woodcutter, carpenter, gatherers.
- Missions for up to 4: scavenge, patrol, escort you, patrol an area you draw, hunt a crew with a grudge, trade with an outpost.
- Hurt one three times and they leave angry. When one dies the others mourn and turn on the killer.
- Raids: hostile groups may attack your base while you're away.
- Call them by walkie-talkie, lend them kit for a trip; medics make rounds; a visiting trader can move in.
Crews can live at your base, Join your faction, Max residents per base (12), Need beds, Need food (off), Clear bodies, Mourn their dead, Say what they're off to do (off / text / voice), Raids on bases, Raid chance (5%).
Reputation
- Standing points with every faction and crew, and bad standing can be worked off: gifts and trades (right-click someone > Trade: swap for what they carry), donations to outposts and killing zombies near people raise it; attacks lower it. Law and military forgive slowly, civilians quickly.
- Witnesses: a deed only counts once someone who saw it gets home. Kill every witness and nobody knows. Hitting an NPC while fighting a zombie is an accident.
- Rumors: what a faction hears spreads to others over a day or so: weaker, and sometimes exaggerated, played down, lost or pinned on someone else.
- Crews act on their own standing, NPCs remember what you did and where, and friendly crews follow, wait or leave on command (or emote).
Standing points, Gain rate / Loss rate (100%), Rumors, Crews act on their own standing, NPCs remember, Donations, Hand gifts, Friendlies follow, NPCs react to emotes, Fair blame.
Hold-ups and mercy
Aim a gun and shout (Q): by default it starts A-Life's own hold-up, with our odds. Their odds depend on how they feel about you, their weapon, wounds, fear, the numbers and friends of theirs you killed. Given in: hands up; Q again for "Drop your weapon!" and "Empty your pockets!" (they may refuse and run or fight). Let them go and it comes back: treated well, a good word or an offer to join you; robbed or hurt, a warning or a revenge squad. Killing someone who surrendered brings revenge too. Hold people up at gunpoint, Letting captives go has consequences.
Safety and tags
With safety on you can't hurt NPCs who aren't hostile to you (PvP button in MP, sidebar button in SP). Hover an NPC: name, faction tag coloured by how they feel about you, a skull if hostile, wounds and pressing moodles, and your residents' task. Safety protects friendly NPCs, Names / Faction tags / Hostile mark / Tasks on mouse-over.
