Silent Hill Belt Radio: Zombie Detector — Build 42

Hear the Danger

Turn your belt-mounted radio into a Silent Hill-inspired warning device. When zombies are nearby, your radio emits eerie static that grows louder as they get closer.

The mod includes original radio static created specifically for this addon.

Belt-Mounted Radios

Attach a portable radio or walkie-talkie to the left or right side of your belt to activate the effect.

Radios in your hands, backpack or on the ground do not activate it. By default, the radio must be switched on and have a charged battery. You can disable this requirement in Sandbox Settings.

Quick Radio Power Toggle

Press J to switch your walkie-talkie on or off without opening its radio window. You can rebind or disable this key in Sandbox Settings → Silent Belt Radio → Walkie-talkie power key.

The hotkey prioritizes an attached walkie-talkie, then searches your inventory and nested containers, including backpacks and webbing pockets. Only one walkie-talkie is toggled per press. Normal battery requirements and the game's standard multiplayer radio synchronization still apply.

Require radio power is enabled by default, so switching the radio off also stops detector static. Existing saves and servers keep their saved Sandbox setting.

Proximity-Based Static

  • Detects living zombies within a configurable radius of 22 tiles by default.
  • Static grows louder as the nearest zombie approaches, with smooth volume transitions.
  • Detects zombies behind walls on the same floor.
  • Ignores dead zombies and zombies on other floors.
  • Stops when you remove the radio, fall asleep or die.
  • Deaf characters hear no static. Hard of Hearing characters hear it at half volume.

Multiplayer Audio

Each client plays its own personal warning sound. Other players do not hear your added static, and it does not attract zombies.

  • Only locally controlled characters can activate the effect.
  • Multiple radios do not create overlapping static loops.
  • The effect stops when you disconnect or return to the main menu.
  • No additional network messages are sent by the mod.
  • Local split-screen uses one shared sound based on the highest threat level among eligible local characters.

Detection uses zombies currently loaded on your client. Network delays may delay the warning. A powered-on radio retains its normal game sounds and behavior.

Sandbox Settings

  • Enable or disable the effect.
  • Set the detection radius from 3 to 40 tiles.
  • Adjust the maximum static volume.
  • Optionally require the radio to be switched on and have battery power.

Settings are available in English and Russian. No additional mods are required.

Requires Project Zomboid Build 42.

After installing or updating, restart your game and server. All players and the server need the same mod version.
