Build Support: B41.78 and B42.12 to B42.21

B42.21 compatibility reviewed. SP and MP Host tested on recent builds.

Trees Have Loot adds useful contextual interactions to trees.

Search them for small foraging loot, fruit, insects and hidden surprises, or equip a suitable tool and cut branches from larger trees.

Results depend on the tree, season, temperature, tree size, your skills and whether that tree has already been harvested recently.

Main Features

Search in Tree

Search trees for possible loot such as:

  • Twigs and branches.
  • Bugs and other small foraging finds.
  • Fruit from suitable fruit trees.
  • Pine cones from pine trees.
  • Wild eggs during warmer seasons.
  • Rare dead critters.

Your Foraging skill and tree size affect the chance of finding loot.

Season and temperature also change what may be found:

  • Winter: mostly twigs and branches.
  • Autumn: branches, twigs and some bugs.
  • Spring: more insects, with wild eggs possible in larger trees.
  • Summer: the highest insect activity and better wild-egg chances.

You can choose:

  • One — perform a single search.
  • All — keep searching automatically until the tree is depleted.

Each completed search has its own chance to deplete the tree, even if nothing is found.

A searched tree becomes available again after about 1 in-game day.

Search Risks & Costs

  • Searching larger trees without hand protection can scratch the player's hands.
  • Pulling branches and twigs from trees reduces Endurance.
  • Heavier finds such as branches cost more Endurance than small finds.
  • Successful searches grant Foraging XP using the game's normal XP multipliers.

Cut Branch from Tree

Equip a suitable sharp tool and cut branches from sufficiently large trees.

Possible results include a tree branch or sapling, with additional tree-specific drops such as pine cones.

You can also choose:

  • One — cut one branch.
  • All — keep cutting until the tree has no available branches left.

Branch cutting consumes Endurance and can wear down the equipped tool.

Weapon wear uses the vanilla B42 weapon-damage system, including:

  • Weapon Condition.
  • Sharpness where applicable.
  • Maintenance skill.
  • Relevant weapon skill such as Axe or Short Blade.

Axes can also occasionally knock a dead squirrel or bird from the tree.

Trees cannot provide unlimited branches. Once depleted, branches regrow after about 30 in-game days.

Branch Destination Options

Mod Options allow you to choose independently where branches cut with different tool types are placed:

  • Branches cut with knives.
  • Branches cut with axes.

They can be placed either in the player's inventory or on the ground.

The default behavior remains similar to the original mod: knives place branches in inventory, while axes drop them on the ground.

Multiplayer & Build Support

  • B41.78 legacy support.
  • B42 multibuild support from B42.12 through B42.21.
  • Multiplayer support for B42.13+.
  • Search and branch-cutting results are handled server-side in MP.
  • Foraging XP, Endurance changes, scratches, item spawning and weapon wear include multiplayer synchronization handling.
  • The All actions wait for the server result before continuing, preventing them from repeatedly acting on an already depleted tree.

B42 compatibility also includes updated item, weapon and tree handling for newer builds, including the larger tree variants introduced in recent B42 versions.

Difference from the Original Trees Have Loot

This Workshop version keeps PepperCat's original concept and gameplay while adding maintenance and compatibility work for newer Project Zomboid versions.

Notable additions include:

  • B41 and B42 multibuild support.
  • B42.13+ multiplayer support.
  • Server-authoritative tree interactions.
  • One / All actions for searching and branch cutting.
  • Rebalanced tree depletion.
  • Updated Endurance costs and Foraging XP handling.
  • Vanilla-style weapon Condition and Sharpness wear.
  • Configurable branch destination for knives and axes.
  • Updated item, weapon, tree and tag compatibility.
  • Improved pathing to trees.
  • B42.15+ JSON translation support.
  • Expanded language support and translation review.

Compatibility Notes

This mod adds context-menu interactions to tree world objects and should work alongside most mods that do not substantially replace tree behavior.

Mods that modify any of the following may affect THL:

  • Tree world objects or sprites.
  • Foraging loot.
  • Weapon or item definitions.
  • Tool tags and categories.
  • Context-menu handling for trees.

Existing saves should normally work, but testing changes on a backup is always recommended.

For multiplayer servers, please report any differences between SP, MP Host and dedicated-server behavior.
