US Military Grenades [B42]
Update 2.22 --- Fixed a bug where GrenadeBallistics.lua and MineExplosionFX.lua could fail to load their required files, which could break explosion/flare effects and mine detonation FX. Added Korean, Turkish, and Ukrainian translations, and completed missing translation strings (mainly around the debug-spawn key) for all previously-supported languages. ---
Update 2.1 - Craftable Grenades + Grenade Bouncing --- You can now craft your own grenades from scratch! Forge a grenade shell, build the fuze assembly, weld yourself a striker lever, then assemble everything together with gunpowder into a working Mk2, M26 or M67 grenade. Producing a grenade is not a trivial task, so the recipes require very high skills to produce and are additionally locked behind a new manual: "TM 9-1300-214: Military Explosives" - look for it where you would expect to find such a thing and maybe as contraband somewhere?
If you're playing with the "Delayed Fuse" sandbox option enabled: grenades that don't detonate on impact can now bounce once or twice before coming to rest and arming for real. The bounce depends on the actual calculated throw energy. Heavier throws bounce further, heavier grenades bounce less, and it roughly follows the direction you threw it in - with a little natural randomness so it doesn't look robotic.
Also lowered the minimum for the "Loot Multiplier" sandbox option from 0.1 to 0.01, for anyone who wants grenades to be even rarer than before.
Also fixed a crash that could happen when an explosion needed to shatter several nearby windows at once, and a visual bug where a bounced grenade would snap to the center of its tile instead of staying exactly where it landed. ---
Update 2.0 - This was a big one and a LOT of work, but I think you will like it. --- On squares that are visible to the player but invisible to the character the aim marker turns red. I don't hard-block the throw, you can still throw at a red marker if you really want to. Just know you're throwing blind at that point: you don't actually have eyes on what's there, so the grenade might not land where you expect - and if you're standing close to whatever's blocking your view, that could get dangerous real fast.
Added a sandbox option to disable instant-exploding grenades. You can decide if you want instant explosions or more realistic behaviour. Set the "Delayed Fuse" option to true, and decide how long the grenade sits armed after landing before it explodes. Threw the grenade against a wall by accident? ... You now have some time to escape your doom :D If a delayed-fuse grenade gets stuck against a wall above ground level, it now falls down to the real floor below.
Completely reworked how the game figures out where you're actually aiming. Changed fence/obstacle recognition from a blacklist to a sprite based getLastPicked. What this means: prior to today's change, the mod checked passability using a square collision check, then checked the tile, and if it was a fence, let the grenade pass if it had enough ballistic height. This turned out to be very unreliable - there are often small objects near fences, and other things I can't fully explain, that incorrectly triggered "obstacle" detection.
I've gone further and thrown that whole approach out. Targeting now uses the exact same depth-correct picking the game itself uses to highlight objects under your cursor. On top of that, the precise height on whatever you're aiming at is now taken into account too - aim partway up a wall and the grenade actually targets that exact spot.
With targeting this precise I added window demolishon - a grenade punches straight through glass without losing momentum, but shatters it on the way through. Explosions now also shatter nearby windows in a radius around the blast (plus the floor above and below) - on buildings and on vehicles alike.
Also reworked throwing down from height - the drop trajectory now properly accounts for the extra range the fall itself gives you, so tossing a grenade off a rooftop actually reaches further than a flat throw would.
This is a much safer approach to a problem the game engine gives me no clean way to solve 100% - and at least now you can safely throw grenades over fences and even low buildings, and through windows! The system is not perfect by any means. I am trying to calculate a 3D trajectory using 2D blocking sprites. This is a faulty system by default. Throwing straight up onto a higher floor especially can still land a bit off. But I will try to improve it as I go along.
And here I need your help!!! Please test the grenades! Throw them into walls, buildings, doors, windows, up onto roofs, anything you like. If you think something should have stopped the grenade and it didn't (or the other way around), report it to me with as much detail as possible - a description of the obstacle and its location, if you can. With your help, I'll keep tightening the ballistics and make them as realistic as possible.
I realize that in their current state (not craftable), grenades are a rare and valuable commodity. To help with testing, I've added a debug-spawn key that doesn't require switching to full debug mode: hold Shift + Numpad "+" (rebindable in Mod Options) to spawn a single flashbang directly into your inventory, whenever you want to do some trajectory testing. ---
