WakeWorld (AI Director) - Versa Ai

A living, talking Knox County for your Build 42 dedicated server.

A small AI program runs on the server PC, next to the game. It writes the radio, the notes, the strangers you meet and the scenes you stumble on, and gives your NPC crew real ears and a real voice.

What it does

  • Talk to anyone. Type in local chat (or /s, /y) near a person and they answer in character. Or hold ALT and just speak: they hear you and answer out loud, in their own voice, from where they stand. About 350 voices - men and women, young and old, many accents - and each person keeps theirs.
  • Radio that talks back. Knox Command and its squads (103.4), the Guard holdouts (93.6), survivors on the open channel (101.1) and Free Radio Knox, a night DJ (97.7). Ongoing stories that drop clues about real places near you. Talk into a walkie, a ham set or a car radio and they answer on the air - if your set can reach them. Weak signal sounds broken up; too far is just static.
  • A crew that takes orders (with Bandits + NPC Crew). Say it the way you would to a friend: go get me the nails, cook something, make a run for gas, find me a shotgun, patch me up, get those bodies picked up, guard the front door. They really do the job, tell you how it went, and remember it.
  • Hands up. Get the drop on someone alone and they may surrender. Talk them down, make them drop their gear or strip, let them go... or not. Word gets around.
  • Scenes and stories. Wrecks, camps, ambushes, a farmer guarding his road, little happenings around your home; notes, journals, field orders and leaflets, written fresh every time.
  • Fate. It quietly judges how each survivor plays: now and then a gift, now and then trouble, sometimes the weather turns.
  • Knows your characters by name - never your account names. Grounded 1993: no jokes, no magic.

How it works

[olist] [*]Every 10 game minutes the server writes a small state file: who is online, where, what is nearby, what the crew is doing. [*]The director program (WWDirector.exe) reads it and asks a language model what should happen - by default a free model on your own PC through Ollama. [*]It writes its answer back as a short command file. The server checks every line against a fixed kit - known items, outfits, vehicles, caps on bodies, walkers and people - and builds only what passes. [*]Voices: when you hold ALT, your game sends your words to the server PC, where Whisper turns them into text. Answers are spoken by Piper or Kokoro (on your PC) or ElevenLabs (online, optional) and played in the world from the speaker. [/olist] Without the director running, the mod does nothing at all - the game plays as normal.

Requirements

Players: just subscribe. For the voices, players also need ZombieBuddy.

Server:

  • WakeWorld QuickAdds (Workshop 3815539888) enabled on the server - required.
  • Windows 10 or 11 on the server PC (.NET Framework 4 is built in).
  • Ollama - free, from ollama.com - and one model. qwen2.5:7b is the default (about 4.7 GB, needs about 6 GB of graphics memory). On an 8 GB card gemma2:9b works well; a weaker PC can use qwen2.5:3b.
  • For the crew: the Bandits and NPC Crew mods on the server.
  • For voices: about 1.5 GB of downloads (see Setup step 4).
  • Optional keys: ElevenLabs for the most natural voices; Groq (free) for faster, sharper reading of crew orders. Without keys everything runs on your own PC.

Setup - about 15 minutes

[olist] [*]Add the mods. Put WakeWorldAIDirector and WakeWorldQuickAdds on the server's Mods= line, and both Workshop IDs (3820409714 and 3815539888) on WorkshopItems=. Restart the server once. [*]Install Ollama from ollama.com. Open a command prompt and run: ollama pull qwen2.5:7b [*]Copy the director. Find the mod on the server PC: steamapps\workshop\content\108600\3820409714\mods\WakeWorldAIDirector\common\director. Copy the whole director folder somewhere permanent, for example C:\WakeWorldAI\ [*]Voices (optional). In that folder, right-click Get-Speech.ps1 and choose Run with PowerShell. It downloads Whisper (the ears), Piper and its voices, and ffmpeg into a speech folder. It is finished when speech\download.log says done. [*]Keys (optional). In game, press Shift+1 as an admin and paste them in. Or put an ElevenLabs key alone in a file called eleven.key, or a Groq key in groq.key, next to WWDirector.exe. [*]Start it. With Ollama running (its tray icon), double-click Start-Director.bat. Leave the window open: it shows everything the AI writes. [*]Play. Join, walk up to someone and say hi, or hold ALT and talk. Tune a radio to 97.7 after dark. [/olist] To stop it: close the window, or make a file called director.stop next to WWDirector.exe. It rests by itself while nobody is online or the server is down.

In game

  • Typing: local chat near someone, or into a two-way radio tuned to one of the four stations.
  • Speaking: hold ALT and talk. You see what it heard, in grey over your head. Your game's voice chat must be switched on in the options; your voice only leaves your game when someone in it could hear you.
  • Crew: talk to a crew member and give the order in plain words. Ask them how it went afterwards.
