Cure Firewood (make aged firewood)
Simple, lightweight but semi-realistic mod to cure firewood. No other mods required.
Description
Hello there,
I suppose there are quite a few mods out there, that may feature some form of 'upgrading' firewood, even add new types of wood but I couldn't find anything that simply cures firewood into aged fire wood
by letting it season for a long time on the ground - so i made my own. (What is my very first, btw 🙃)
The mod itself is pretty simplistic, basically it's using the same mechanic like curing oiled hides - drop on a ground, wait, ... profit.
Also wanted to use existing in-game mechanics & items w/o introducing even more mods that may add more items that also have to be maintained.
I've actually no clue how long woods needs to season in real life, but after a short research I came up with 6-24 months, depending on wood type & climate.
While realism is desired - felt making it season 6 in-game months is a fairly good balance between realism & gameplay fun.
Thereby firewood takes 54 days to season (equally 6 standard months with 9 days).
Of course aged firewood will have benefits - like a slightly increased burn temp 700C to 800C and a drastically increased burn time (225sec)
There are no other benefits on purpose. The increased burn time makes it a wonderful, still efficient fuel for your fireplace w/o breaking the fuel economy too much.
(Feel free to change my mind tho)
I like a crackling fireplace in my base but I don't want to deforest everything around me nor hire someone to produce digital firewood for me, ha.
In my opinion it's way more immersive felling a few trees in a nearby forest, build a few basic shacks & leave it there to dry/season for a while.
The burn time of 225 seconds per log equals 2 (real life) hours of burn time per stack (32 logs).
That should be long enought for your adventure, still you may come back to your cozy base with a fire still lit.
... maybe threw a few logs more into the fire, eh? 🔥
Important:
- You may remove the mod from your save all the time - at least I didn't notice any issues while testing this several times.
The logs will just loose the cure status & revert back to their original burn duration. If you re-activate the mod it seems to continue the curing process. - The logs won't loose their curing status when being moved around, however merging stacks in the inventory may reset parts of the curing process and/or merge to an average of all logs in the stack.
Merely for immersive reasons it's not advised to move the logs around constantly anyways, till they are cured. 😌 - Been testing it on 1.22.0-rc6 - 1.22.0-rc10 as well as the recent 1.22.0 (full release)
Suppose it's down- & upwards compatible to all 1.22.0 versions tho!
Optional(!) ConfigLib / ImGui support:
If you don't use Config lib / ImGui nothing will change for you - i wanted to keep this mod very lightweight.
Even with those installed it only creates a config file that sticks to the default values.
You have to download & install Config lib as well as ImGui to set custom values tho.
- If you want to change burn time, burn temp or cure duration you may do that after you downloaded the newest version (1.0.1). It should generate a config file (curefirewood.yaml) for you.
- If you change values with ImGui (ergo in game) you need to reload the word to make the changes happen!
Please make sure to read apply the 'safety checkbox' before you set custom values ing will change. - Even if you change the sliders, this is by design ;)
It's not recommended to change it constantly since cure duration of existing firewood won't change retroactively, only applies to new logs!
Future plans:
- Figuring out, if it may be possible to stop the curing process, if the logs are exposed to water / wetness. So you have to cover the top layer to some point or build a firewood shack.
- Figuring out, if it's possible to speed up the curing in a cellar with heat-source. (kiln-dried wood)
DISCLAIMER
This is my first mod without prior experience of creating mods for Vintage Story. Been testing it for a while on my own game & my server. Noticed any issues (yet.)
To be fair I've no understanding of the game-engine - so maybe gazillion of logs curing at the same time may cause lag? 🤕
