Fair Fish

ABy Averixus

Make fish flaying drops consistent with their size

Description

No more gambling over whether it's more efficient to cook a fish whole or flay it first!

This is a small mod which corrects the drops from flaying and cooking fish to be consistent, and fixes a bug so that actual flaying output is shown in the handbook. Now every fish will provide exactly the same food value if cooked whole, or flayed and cooked in individual pieces.

Entity size, GUI item icons, stack sizes, ground storage sizes and layouts are all subtly tweaked to be more consistent so that it's easier to judge the size of a fish at a glance. And use as bait is made size-consistent too. The individual fish piece items are also renamed to "fish fillets" to reduce ambiguity between them and whole cooked fish.

Also recommended: Fishing Config, to fix vanilla bugs in the fishing code and make the speed and difficulty of fishing and worming configurable.

Exact changes

You can see the full details of vanilla fish drops and what this mod changes on this handy spreadsheet.

There is a consistent relationship between the size of a whole fish and the amount of fillets received from flaying:

 • Output 1 cooked fish fillet = 1 raw fish fillet from flaying
 • Output 1 small cooked fish = 2 raw fish fillets from flaying
 • Output 1 medium cooked fish = 4 raw fish fillets from flaying
 • Output 1 large cooked fish = 7 raw fish fillets from flaying
 • Output 1 huge cooked fish = 9 raw fish fillets from flaying
 • Too large to cook over a fire = 15 raw fish fillets from flaying

You can also determine the bait validity and size of a fish based on the listed cooking output:

 • Output 1 cooked fish fillet = usable as "tiny fish" bait
 • Output 1 small cooked fish = usable as "small fish" bait
 • Any other output = not usable as bait

This mod doesn't affect the satiety bonus when fish fillets are used in meals (which is always better than cooking the pieces or the whole fish over a fire). It also doesn't change which types of bait each fish likes.
