Description

The Puma Corvette is a fast, hydrogen powered direct attack ship primarily designed for quick strikes against vessels of a similar size or larger. To this end, the ship features ten forward facing sequenced rocket launchers with a repair system and is fast and light enough to hit most ships and withdraw before the enemy can bring their main weapons to bear. While capable of planetary flight, the Puma is primarily designed for space combat. The Puma's hydrogen system has ten tanks and ten generators and although the ships main propulsion has limited range compared to an Ion based ship, the Puma also features two Jumpdrives to allow travel over long distances .

Background

Although reasonably fast and well armed, the venerable Tiger Corvette had served the CEU for the best part of fifty years and had started to show it's age. Expensive to build, with poor handling, no Jumpdrive and mounting reliability issues, engineers at Hyperion Systems began to look for a replacement. The resolution of the Europa Conflict had come at a high price, and it was politically difficult for the CEU Council to allow the expensive and platinum rich Tiger to be replaced like for like. However, the increasingly aggressive Horus Empire remained a key threat to the belts interest and the fleet could not afford to lose the Tiger's attacking capabilities. With half of Europa under CEU control and vast reserves in the belt, the price of Ice had fallen dramatically. Therefore, the decision was made to pursue a cheaper, hydrogen based Corvette.

The conflict deemed most likely to occur in the new century was the invasion of the Belt by the Horus Empire. With hundreds of hydrogen refuelling stations throughout the belt, the decreased range of hydrogen was not considered a huge drawback in this defensive engagement and was thought to be a fair trade off for the new craft's excellent speed, agility and atmospheric capabilities. Cheaper, faster, lighter, more agile and with more firepower, CEU pilots have quickly grown to adore the new Puma Corvette and with generous trade in deals available for old Tiger's, nearly all of the older models have been replaced, providing Hyperion Systems with a great deal of needed capital and platinum. Like it's forefather, the Tiger, the Puma has become very popular with the belts less savoury characters and the phrase “You can hide, but you can't run” remains as potent a threat as ever.
