SpaceGPT — A Galaxy That Talks Back

Space isn't quiet anymore.

SpaceGPT fills Space Engineers' empty stations with characters driven by real LLM brains — they talk, they walk, they trade, and they remember you. Stations hail you on approach and grant you a landing pad. Inside, a crew goes about its business — each one with a name, a job, a history, and a price.

The year is 2100. The universe is listening.

⚠️ STILL IN ACTIVE DEVELOPMENT

The core systems work and the mod is playable, but this is not a finished product — you may hit rough edges, especially with crew behaviour.

Your feedback shapes where this goes. If something breaks or you have an idea, leave a comment. Telling me what happened, where it happened, and adding a screenshot if you can makes it far faster to fix. Every report gets read. 🙏

🛰️ ARRIVAL

Traffic Control — Fly within 750 m of an NPC station and traffic control hails you. A panel opens showing the free pads and your ship's connectors, and you request clearance. Drag your mouse to rotate the 3D hologram of your own ship right there in the panel.

Auto-Docking — Once you're cleared, take your hands off the controls. The autopilot aligns your connector to the pad axis, settles into the approach corridor, and flies you in. If the station hull is in the way, it routes around it.

💰 ECONOMY & HAGGLING

The Station Market — Say "trade" to a station NPC (or type /sgpt trade) and the amber market terminal opens. What you see isn't fake: it's the station's real store inventory, real orders, real prices. Buy and sell goods, components — even oxygen and hydrogen, delivered straight into your ship's tanks (and your suit, for O2).

Trading With the Crew — Walk up to any crew member and press F for their own blue panel. Every crew member carries their own wallet and their own role-appropriate stock.

Real Haggling — Don't like the price? Hit HAGGLE and type your own number. This isn't a dice roll: your offer goes straight to that NPC's LLM brain. Their personality, their mood, how much they trust you, and how cheeky your offer is all decide the answer. Sometimes they take it. Sometimes they laugh. Sometimes they counter.

🤝 REPUTATION — THEY REMEMBER YOU

Standing runs from −100 to +300 across 6 tiers. Here's the interesting part: it isn't moved by a counter, it's moved by the NPC. At the end of every exchange the AI forms its own verdict on how you treated it and adjusts your score accordingly.

  • Be decent and straight with them — it climbs. Be rude, throw threats — it drops.
  • Every completed trade nudges your standing up as well.
  • At 100+ they'll start handing you gifts, unprompted.
  • At 200+ automatic discounts kick in, scaling from 10% up to 50%.
  • Drop below −75 and they stop selling to you entirely.

And it gets personal: they remember the gift they gave you, the ship they sold you, the big deal you closed — and they'll bring it up in conversation.

👥 CREW — STATIONS ARE NO LONGER EMPTY

Every station you find comes alive with its own crew of four. 9 professions: Trader · Guard · Engineer · Mechanic · Doctor · Miner · Pilot · Chef · Scientist

They actually live there — These aren't props. Driven by a purpose-built navigation system, they move around the station, take seats, linger at store blocks and terminals, and even dance when the lights go into disco mode. Their name and role float above their head.

Death is permanent — If a crew member dies, they're gone. That slot locks; only after you leave the area and return does someone completely different take their place. The person you knew doesn't come back.

Law enforcement — Every station has a guard. Act threatening and the NPCs report you. You get one warning. Push it, and the guard hunts you down and opens fire.

🧠 THE CHARACTERS

  • Cultural identity — Every NPC carries a culturally accurate name and a real ancestral city on Earth. Ask a Spanish miner where they're from and hear about their heritage and regional food.
  • Epic titles — Station NPCs carry one of 12 characterful titles — "Jack the Gambler", "the Scrap Baron" — and it shapes how they speak.
  • Situational awareness — They know where they are, which planet is nearby, the state of your ship, whether you're armed, and what was said earlier.
  • Voiced (TTS) — They don't just type, they speak. Voices match the character and their language.
  • In your language — NPCs reply in whatever language your game is set to.

⚙️ REQUIREMENTS

  • Python 3.10+ — python.org/downloads
  • Player2 Desktop App (free) — player2.game
  • Built for singleplayer; multiplayer is untested.
  • Trading features require NPC economy stations that have a Store block.

💡 Bring your own AI. You decide which LLM runs your NPCs — point Player2 at a local model (Ollama and friends) or your favourite cloud model. The mod works with any of them.

🚀 SETUP — READ BEFORE PLAYING

This mod is a bridge and needs an AI backend running alongside it. Every session:

1. Install Python 3.10+. (Tick "Add Python to PATH" during install.) 2. Launch Player2 and leave it running in the background. 3. Start Space Engineers and load your world with SpaceGPT enabled. (This matters — the sidecar files are only created once the world has loaded.) 4. Alt+Tab and open this folder:

%APPDATA%\SpaceEngineers\Storage\3709821588.sbm_SpaceGPT[/code]
